Default When did hunger strike for you?

I am 5 weeks out now and so far, have had little if any hunger. However, I don't know if the last couple of days, my mind is trying to play tricks on me or if I am genuinely starting to get the hunger feeling back.

I am feeling ever so slightly empty at the moment but I can't tell if its hunger or just my old, greedy mind saying you can eat something lol.

How far were you before genuine hunger came back?

When my stomach starts to grumble, I know I'm hungry, and it's not in my head! Typically I think back to when I ate and it has been a while.

(But I'm too far out to remember when this happened).

Hi Alison, I am now 2 days short of 10 weeks out and I do not yet have that hunger feeling. I do know when i need to eat something though, as i do start feeling a bit weak and shaky. I am trying to listen to my body now as before the operation I never felt hungry or full. I think each person is different. I doubt its you being greedy, its just you adjusting to the new eating regime. Keep going as you are doing well.

Hmmm ... I think I felt hunger the second month. And certainly by the fourth month I was hungry at mealtimes. These days (nearly four years out), I'm definitely hungry at mealtimes.

As you probably know, ghrelin (the hunger hormone) produced by our bodies is greatly reduced after VSG surgery, since the removed portion of the stomach is where our bodies natively produce a lot of ghrelin. Honestly, even after all this time, my physical hunger for food does not seem as strong as it was pre-WLS.

But I have a gentle observation to offer you ....

Try not to think of hunger as your enemy. It's not your enemy. All human bodies experience hunger when we need nutrition and sustenance.

What you may (?) be thinking (remembering?) about "hunger" is that you had tremendous urges, sometimes uncontrollable urges, to eat at times when you weren't actually physically hungry, but were accustomed to eating to ameliorate unpleasant sensations and emotions, e.g., you were anxious, bored, tired, lonely, angry, procrastinating, overwhelmed, etc.

Even when you're not physically hungry, post-WLS you may still have the urge to eat if you again start feeding yourself and any "eating to feel better" habits, especially if you feed those old habits with "slider foods," e.g., crackers, sweets, highly processed flours and grains.

But for the first year or more the sleeve really does give you an advantage over all kinds of hunger -- physical and "head hunger." I've read that, after the first year or so, some patients' bodies start to develop ghrelin in other organs and that hunger starts to ratchet back up.

I wish I knew of some actual research that I could quote about this, but I can't. If anyone else has seen research about this, PLEASE post a link here.

You are right Ann, I was worried that the hunger feeling would be the start of the old me again. The me that ate because of boredom and definitely ate when I knew I couldn't possibly be hungry as it was maybe only an hour ago that I ate a large meal.
You have such wisdom and insight Ann, thank you for adding that wisdom to my post.

Honestly I had to eat bites of food frequently the first few months due to feeling hungry and not being able to eat much. I think the actual go a while and feel regular intervals of hunger was around 4 or 5 months. I also know that if I eat a protein rich meal there is a lot longer span before I feel hungry. If it is lower in protein I will feel hunger quicker.

True, genuine hunger returned sometime between the seventh and ninth month post-op for me.

I had stomach grumbling and growling during those first few weeks and months; however, the sleeve enabled me to learn the difference between true hunger and 'desire.'

Although I wanted (and still want) to eat, my desire to eat is not quite the same as real hunger.

    Good luck to you.

I heard a great term today on NPR ... "eating as entertainment." Add that to the list of fake hunger impulses.

Hmmm I'm trying to think about this... I was hungry initially while on fluids then once I moved onto soft food that stopped. And now I feel hungry when I need a meal... Like normal people! Lol. Its just not that insatiable I need to eat everything hunger. I could also skip a meal if I wanted to. Not that I do. Some really excellent advice from Ann above (of course), she has said it all really so I shall shutuppamyface.
Hope life is peachy AlisonJayne :-)

I am still not hungry after almost 1,5 year.
I do however have this kind of nagging feeling, when it is time to eat.
It probably is hunger, but the feeling is so much different as it used to be.
    I'm not complaining.

Intially, I dealt with head hunger especially when I had to cook for my son. I'm 3 months post op, I'm never hungry. If you're hungry, make sure to eat lean proteins first. This option will keep you full and satisfied for longer periods.

I have the same sort of feeling -- not hungry, but sort of non-hunger reminder that I need some protein + something. I do still eat at odd intervals because "toad froth" and too much at a time. BUT i do not feel the kind of famished hunger I remember. My stomach doesn't growl, although it makes some fantastical odd sounds!

Most days, I really don't want to eat at all, but do want to have a healthy body so track my nutrition. I have no problem cooking, and except for one day during Our Daily Bread Ministry when there were fresh, warm, fragrant apple fritters in the car on the way to the Soup Kitchen, I have not really felt ike eating my previous foods. And no, I didn't have an apple fritter. But oh how the smell engaged me!

For me I have been hungry on average about every 2-3 hours. I know this is not the norm on here as I have expressed feeling not normal about this hungry feeling before. It is the same kind of hunger I got before surgery, that empty stomach gurgling I need to eat feeling. I can actually feel my empty stomach and get the hungry horrors. It isn't gas or heartburn, I know what those feel like. I have felt hunger from the very beginning. I've just accepted that this is how the surgery ended up for me. I guess my surgeon didn't get much of the stomach where the ghrelin hormones were or I just have an excess of it. Or my stomach empties quicker and I am in tune to what is going on down there. Honestly, it is annoying to have to pack snacks and having to eat a quick bite every couple of hours to satisfy that hunger, but I am staying in my calorie range dictated by my RD and am losing steadily so something must be going right! Also, after writing about this before and thinking about that hungry feeling I often get during the day, it makes me feel more normal if that makes sense?

Can I make a few suggestions?

. Reflux can be mistaken for hunger, so if you have been prescribed medication (a proton pump inhibitor), please take it! If you don't have any, maybe worthwhile seeing your primary care Dr and getting a prescription.

. Is it "head hunger"? Would you eat a bowl of something you would normally detest e.g. brussel sprouts to reach satiety?
. What else is happening? Are you bored?

. Are you following the guidelines/rules?
    * "20, 20, 20". Chew each tiny mouthful 20 times on one side of your mouth, then 20 times on the other before yo swallow. Then wait 20 seconds before re-loading your tiny utensil. *Another signal to the brain to stop eating is the small intestine reacting to stretch from the presence of food. If you eat too fast, you can shovel a lot in before the small intestine gets the message, and sends it to the brain*
    * ALWAYS protein first, then non-starchy veg.
    * Use healthy fats and oils (avoid the inflammatory ones).
    * No fluids 20 mins before or after your meals, you don't want to wash the food in your stomach out by fluid.
    * No grazing.
    * If you are going to snack, make it protein
