Default To poop or not to poop.......

that is the question. So I know lots of fellow sleevers on here have constipation issues. Myself included. Although mine has gotten better I still have to track it and make sure I am going. My surgeon told me about something natural to help. Magnesium (high potency) 400 mg soft gels!! I started using them and it has definitely worked. He said to make sure they are soft gel. I bought the Nature Made brand.

That's a good one I haven't heard of. I have used stool softener tablets and also fiber tablets, but neither really fixed things totally. Lately I've been trying to diversify with more salads and high fiber / roughage crackers to see if that helped.

It's weird how different we all are. I have the complete opposite issue. Within 15 minutes of drinking my protein shake I'm almost running to the bathroom. I'm pretty sure I'm lactose intolerant so maybe I just need to switch up the kind of protein I use. But I think i'd rather have my problem

This is great advice Christie and the magnesium will be good for your running legs too! Bonus!!! I might try it myself, I've done okay really but here and there I think I could do with something so I rely on a prune! I shall try the mag :-)

    Hi Christie13!

This is invaluable information. Thank you for sharing. I too sometimes feel the pinch as it were, and wind up taking a laxative known as Senna coupled with Magnesium, and I am good to go, so to speak. I have found that I require several doses of this combination in order for everything to begin functioning at normal capacity again, but this is not always the case. My body can be a stubborn entity, and as such, seems to operate with a mind of it's own. All I can do in situations such as these is allow it to take it's time and pray that everything works out.

Christie, the only thing about your use of what sounds like a big dose of magnesium for constipation is that, like some other vitamins/minerals/supplements/medications, magnesium MIGHT put some of your other vitamin/mineral/supplement/meds out of whack.

Please don't think I have anything specific in mind. But I just know that everything we take can have (but is not guaranteed to have) an unintended consequence.

Knowing how thorough you are about such things, maybe you've already done your research well about what ELSE might happen as a result of upping your magnesium so much.

Otherwise, congratulations on what sounds like a good result in the pooping department.

I've been taking prescription Linzess for the last 4 years, and I think it is a Godsend as it works like clockwork. I sing its praises frequently here.

I was so grumpy with my husband prior to our cross country trip last week because I knew I was not going to be able to take my "poop pill" while on the road. I cannot bring myself to go potty in public restrooms unless it's an emergency. I just knew he was going to leave me dead in the desert since nobody wants to deal with Katrina who hasn't pooped. And while he didn't kill me and leave me in the desert, I was whiny about my tummy hurting, especially after eating nonstop the whole time. It was a great day when we got home, and I could resume my morning potty schedule.

Besides hydration, what are other natural ways to alleviate constipation? Ones I've heard of are aloe vera, beans, flax seeds and spinach.

I take my magnesium at night and my regular vitamins during the day. I also don't need iron (which is the main thing magnesium affects) because I have high iron without taking any supplements. Most likely since I have always had high iron??

I get lots of fluids in. Have tried all sorts of stool softeners, fiber, and what not. Only things that worked are suppositories or laxatives. Don't want to have to keep taking those.

Doctor said take a magnesium before bed but if you are blocked up to take two. So far it has made me regular. And I don't have that painful gas that comes with laxatives.

Yeah it is probably your shake. It is not uncommon for a sleever to become lactose intolerant.

I've taken the sennacot and it makes my belly hurt when I do go. So I have found that the high dose of magnesium nightly seems to keep me regular in a super gentle way.

Being blocked up makes me super bitchy, too!! Absolutely horrendous. I feel sorry for anyone in my path when my stomach is feeling like I swallowed a boulder. I am pretty sure the theme music from Wizard of Oz when the wicked witch would come around plays as I walk around miserable. LOL.
