    Default Proteins

    Hey All,

Was curious what you all eat for proteins? No protein shakes, food you eat.

I don't like fish or seafood and one of the FB groups I am on someone posted no red meat. Which I know is not true, but if by some chance it slows the weight loss process down well then I might want to avoid it. Being anemic they encourage red meat as well. I don't want to live off of chicken for the rest of my life.

I'm really hoping that after surgery that my taste buds change and I can tolerate fish and seafood. It looks fabulous when people i know cook it or I see it on TV, but yeah no.

I just don't want to get bored or eat something way off plan.

I eat a lot of chicken - a lot! Probably not what you want to hear. Also fish, eggs, and small amounts of beef and lamb. I find the red meat harder to digest and sits heavily in my stomach. Red meat in casserole or stew forms are good and if you add in some lentils or tinned beans they up the protein content. Prawns also feature and cottage cheese is a staple for lunches. I have the occasional bit of pork but as with the red meat this is harder to digest. There are quite a few good bariatric recipes around if you have time to Google. Also there are some good recipes on this blog http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/
    Hope this helps :-)

I too eat a lot of chicken. We're talking I buy it in 40 pound cases. It does go a lot further than it use to My quick go to is tuna in those pouches. I can handle lower fat beef and lean pork. Beans are also one of my go to proteins. I LOVE peanut butter but it has a whole lots of calories and fat...not so worried about the fat though. I found pb fit peanut butter powder. It only has 50 calories in 2 tablespoons! Works great in baking, smoothies and i even put it in my protien shake when I have them (which is almost never). Makes them taste better. I just make a serving and eat it plain. Oh so good! Hope this helps a little!

I may be fat, but I have been a picky eater for as long as I can remember so I'm a little worried about post op. Looks like me and chickens will be close friends post op. Hope it is not one of the foods I no longer want.

    Thanks for the information!!

You don't have to eat chicken. I just find it easy, filling and I quite like it. Having said that even I get tired of it and have to have a change.
Eggs, cottage cheese, minced beef, slow cooked beef or lamb, casserole style or stew would all be good. My tastes definitely changed after surgery - goodness knows why and I really like healthy good protein now. I used to love fresh salmon but can't eat it now. Had a big dose of Annie's "Toad Froth" and it has put me off. Other fish is ok though.
It will be an adventure for you to find out what you like and what suits :-)

No red meat?? LOL. And LOL some more. I eat a lot of red meat. No issues with my bloodwork numbers, either. The red meat has not messed with my cholesterol or anything. I eat fish, chicken, beef, pork, beans, seeds, nuts (I don't eat a lot of nuts since they are high in calories for very little.)….pretty much anything.

Oh I know I don't have to eat it, but it is one of the main things I eat. I either have it at lunch or dinner. But I don't like any fish or seafood and not a big fan of protein powders or bars I just don't want to be lacking on protein come time. At least chicken can be made many ways with just different seansons, etc. Like your other suggestions as well.

    Question Re: Proteins

Has anyone heard about the "ketogenic diet?" It's real food, low carb. However, the emphasis is not so much on high protein as it is on higher fat. Yeah. I know that sounds counter-intuitive. After reading several (like 5, so far) books about the ketogenic diet, the science on it is solid.
I'm preparing for my surgery as much as possible. To that end, I'm working to figure out
    1) what full liquids to start off with
    2) how to figure out my protein intake (how many grams are adequate?)
    3) at all costs, how to avoid throwing up!

Thoughts anyone? Thank you in advance for any words of wisdom you can give me.

You may choose protein foods like meat, chicken, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products and nuts.

My go to protein foods after surgery are scrambled eggs, refried beans with cheese, chicken salad, roasted chicken wings, and Greek yogurt.
