    Default protein question

I was wondering if I can tolerate a protein shake before surgery does it mean there is a good chance that I will be able to tolerate
it after surgery or not necessarily.

I think finding one you actually like pre-surgery is important. Tolerating is a whole other issue. There may be many foods you cannot stomach after surgery. It's such a wait and see situation. I liked the taste and variety of Premier Protein shakes and stuck with them throughout pre-op diet and tolerated them very well after. But my stomach is strong, I haven't had any issues with food rejection. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

I could drink any protein shake. Some people can't. Hope you will be lucky like me!

Not necessarily. One thing that was huge for me is that my tastes changed immediately post op. The protein shakes that I liked from my surgeon's office pre op were disgusting to me post op. And I wasted $55 on a big bag of it. That is just taste, though. Post op there are lots of people who have issues with certain foods. I did not. I just went through a period where sweet tastes made me grossed out.

I didn't like any of the protein shakes before surgery, but sucked it up and got the Premier chocolate shakes because I knew I had to drink them after surgery. I ended up really enjoying them afterwards, but the thickness of the shake caused me to spend over 2 hours trying to drink it. I kept getting toad froth...ack!I read on here about the Syntrax Nectar and it has been a godsend. I mix them with unsweetened almond milk so they go down easy and taste delicious

I think you should try a few different samples and try and decide which one you like the best. In my experience, I could drink them with no issues at all. I will say that after two or three days I got real sick of them, which I am still sick of them today (One Month Post Op) however, I made a decision to go into this 100% and I realized that these protein shakes will be a big part of my life. So I just include them into my daily life and learn to live with them. I do drink different flavors all the time to switch it up. Good luck to you on your journey!!!

    It could....

But, remain flexible because things change after. Things you used to love will no longer work for the new you. I would have a list of acceptable shakes and be ready to switch it up if they are not working for you.

I was lucky in that the shakes I used I tolerated well. I hated them, but I just forced myself to meet (and exceed) my daily protein requirement. They tasted great on day one, but by day 5, 10, etc they were downright horrible. Thank god I no longer need them! Although I have debated about adding a protein shake back into my diet during my current training plan.

    Hope this helps!

Everyone has a different experience. For me, shakes as well as food was just not that appealing for severaI weeks, and I ate because I needed to. A few things did taste different for a while. Tuna had a metallic taste, Crystal Light and similar drinks tasted intensely strong, and all firm protein tasted exactly the same. Now at 16 months out, l drink chocolate protein shakes, and actually enjoy them, and my taste buds have returned to normal.
