    Default Vitamins immediately post-op

So it appears that my surgeon prescribes a diet of clear liquids for one week, then full liquids, then puree, then semi-solid, then solid... each for a week. But they've told me I can commence taking most of my meds, including my bariatric multivitamin capsule, immediately after surgery. I asked them if I could really swallow it whole, and they said yes, and that I could also eat the calcium chews as normal.

This seems weird to me, as my partner couldn't even take pain relief by capsule after her sleeve. She had to be all liquid. Have I misunderstood them?

    Hi Amy,

I am three weeks out of surgery today, my surgery was Friday April 20, 2018. I think all Doctor's are different just as patient's are. I am able to start puree foods today as well as my chewy vitamin. I was on clear liquids for one week post op, and the last two weeks regular liquids with creamy soups, some yogurt, ect... So my advice is follow what your Dr says and don't worry or compare yourself to others. You can sure use others as a guide, but the Dr knows what they are doing.

I got a lot of great information off of youtube videos and there is a Dr V on there who is a bariatric surgeon who gives great advice to people who have had surgery or looking to have surgery. I decided to document my journey and post video's as well. I think it is a great thing to pass on information to those looking for it who are new to the process. Good luck with your journey!!

My doctor told me I could take pills from the start so even in the hospital they gave me Tylenol caps and I started taking the large Bariatric mulitvitamins right away. I know some doctors say no, but mine and the bariatric center where I had my surgery (Johns Hopkins) said there is no problem with it so I just took their advice and was swallowing 5 pills/day right after surgery without problem.

Hey Dale - I can't remember, did you have a hiatal hernia repair at the same time? That might make a difference with whether or not we can do the full pill or crushed. My surgeon said to plan on crushing my pills for a couple of weeks at least....but I am having a hernia repair.

Thanks! I am having a hernia repair too... but that didn't seem to stop them from telling me it was okay.

Nope, no hernia. Originally I was told no pills but then the bariatric center at Hopkins said the "new" protocol is pills are fine. But if I've learned anything from this forum it's that every surgeon has a different way of dealing with almost everything.

I had chewable vitamins after surgery. I used the ProCare Health ones, just one a day and very tiny. They are on-line. I can't remember the calcium chewable I had but it was yummy, orange flavored.

I took pills. I am very sensitive to vitamin tastes. There is no way I could take liquid ones. I never had any issues and my bloodwork is always good.

I was able to swallow pills day after surgery. In fact, my surgeon wouldn't let me leave until he knew I could swallow pills without a problem.

I was totally concerned - thinking, gee, I can't eat anything solid, but my stomach can handle these hard pills? But I didn't have any issues.
