Default Can I really lose at least 10 lbs?

My surgeon has told me that he expects a 10-15 lb weight loss before my surgery. Is it really possible to lose 10-15 lbs in two weeks on the following diet?

Week one: 3 protein shakes (180-200 cal ea) and one small low fat/carb/cal meal a day
Week two: 5 protein shakes a day

I have been using MFP to track my calories (spottily, I need to be better about that) and have been doing two shakes a day for breakfast and lunch, and just haven't been super restrictive at dinner, and I'm stalling this week. I do that, and I'm not sure why... I probably haven't gotten enough water.

At any rate, do you think it's possible to lose 10+ lbs, even though I've already probably gotten that initial "water weight" boost you get in the first week of dieting?

It will be very easy to lose 10-15 in two weeks. I started lighter than you and lost 19. My friend was similar in weight to you and he lost 24. It works. Follow the plan to the letter. Also losing in the pre-op diet gives you a jump start to your surgical weight loss. YOU can do this. Make it work. Good luck.

I hope you're right... I don't think my surgeon would look at an 8-9 lb weight loss and refuse to do the surgery. He said he didn't used to check weight the day of surgery but too many people were having 'food funerals' and not following the diet.

I consider myself lucky, no one told me to lose weight before surgery. It seems pointless to me, as the pounds will fall off after! Why starve yourself when you have a regular sized stomach? (Just my crazy, non-medical opinion.)

Apparently it has to do with shrinking the size of your liver so your surgery is safer. (Also, to some degree, to prove you can comply with dietary instructions.)

I get the wisdom of it, I just hope that he's not strict about the 10 lbs. I'm sure I'll lose at least five, but I'm freaking out that if I show up with 9 lbs lost he's gonna be like, "Sorry, you must have cheated."

I did have to do a 5 day pre-op diet of protein shakes and other liquids to shrink my liver. just no weight loss requirement. You'll be fine, get ready for FUN!

Hi. I think that you will be fine.
As well as shrinking the fatty liver I think it possibly also shows your commitment to the way of life afterwards.....which is way more fun than they pre op diet that's for sure.
Stick to it. It's only for a short time and then the fun starts.

No problem on that. It's very doable. If all you're eating is protein shakes and no real solids, then your body does some strange things to compensate for the sudden absence of carbs and fats. If you look up Ketosis and diets along those lines, that's what you're being moved towards with a all liquid high protein diet. Works wonders short term, after a week or two though it gets pretty boring. Then again, after the first week of clear liquids, you'll be feeling nostalgic for protein shakes, so it's all a matter of perspective. Don't worry, it all comes together in the end. Best wishes!

I lost weight on the pre op and I was 6 days of the 2 shakes and one meal and then 3 days of liquids. I am sure if you follow the rules you will be fine.

Just be sure you restrict carbs and sugars and eat mostly lean protein and low-carb vegetables for your one "real" meal. Liver reduction comes from less carbs & sugar. When you say you haven't been super-restrictive on your meal, it's ok if you are eating more protein than your guidelines but you really can't loosen up on the carbs or you will not lose the weight or shrink your liver.

Thanks! I am being less restrictive now because my two-week diet hasn't started yet. I'm sort of semi doing it as a preview and to keep my calories down, generally. Once I'm officially in the two-week period, I'll be strict.

Yes I just went through this and I had to do the pre surgery 2 week liver shrinking diet as well, but not given any amount I had to lose. There must be a wide range of how much people lose. I was told it makes the surgery easier when the liver is smaller. Your second week will be easier b/c you will only be doing shakes so there won't be any food decisions to make. When your just on shakes it's much easier to lose weight. My instructions were 2 weeks of 4 shakes a day. I lost 15 pounds. I was allowed bullion which was a nice to have amongst the shakes however I didn't use a full cube so I wouldn't get a ton of salt. I thought the 2nd week was easier than the first b/c I wasn't as hungry because of ketosis. Good luck to you.
