    Default Arthritis issues

Hi everybody, I have severe arthritis in both hips and will eventually need replacements. To the point where there's days I can barely walk. Now I'm having lower back issues as well. Part of the reason I'm having my surgery. It will be nice to have a little better quality of life back again. I was wondering if anyone else with arthritis issues have had any relief after your weight loss? Thanks in advance.

Hi Devin! I have some hip arthritis, arthritis in both knees, both ankles, and all of my foot bones are fused. I've noticed my knees don't hurt as bad as before and I'm able to walk a little bit more than I used to. I've lost over 100 lbs and was hoping that it would help the arthritis more than it has. Still have a lot of physical limitations when it comes to exercise.

The only thing that makes me feel better about it is knowing that losing all that extra weight should at least slow down the progress.

    Good luck!

Thank you, I kinda think I won't have the relief I'm hoping for, but even some will be better than none I guess. Congratulations on your weight loss, you look great and I hope I have as good of results as you're having.

Yes - the weight loss will help with your hips.

I have one arthritic hip that started giving me trouble about two years ago. Tried PT, cortisone injections, TENS, etc. - no relief.

Since surgery it has improved, I'm able to walk further, climb stairs easier, get out of chairs easier. Before my weight loss I was taking ibuprofen constantly trying to stay mobile and had progressed to taking tramadol and meloxicam. Those days are long gone, nothing but an occasional tylenol now. My hip hasn't yet improved to the point that I'm running marathons, but I'm also only halfway to my weight loss goal too. So I'm hoping for continued improvement.

Deep down I am afraid that the damage has already been done and no amount of weight loss will bring back the good ole days. But looking on the bright side - my surgeon of choice denied me for total hip replacement surgery at my previous weight. At my current weight he says I am eligible IF I decide to go ahead with THR. one step at a time/one pound at a time.

Sounds a lot like what I'm going through. I"ve tried injections, they only last a couple of weeks, Rx pain meds didn't work, so I"m hoping to get relief after getting some weight off. Hopefully it will work like it has for you. Congrats on your progress!

In the same boat with arthritis in my knee and back. It has gotten so much better with losing the weight but it is still there and the damage has been done with years of abuse. Don't get me wrong though I'm in such a better place now and should have done this years ago! I'm active now. I can run, only for only a few minutes but I can do it! It will get better but don't expect to be back where you were when you were younger. I wish it would work that way!

In a word, YES! Losing a significant amount of weight will show an improvement I'm sure. I have some age related arthritis, but after losing my weight everything hurts much less. In fact my feet used to hurt all the time, they don't hurt at all anymore. Still have some knee issues going on, but they are much better than they used to be.

Just think of all that stress your extra weight is putting on your joints. My feet were so happy when they didn't have to carry around my heavy body any more. (And oddly, I now wear a smaller size shoe.)

Ditto what Cody said; on rainy days (okay full disclosure - I'm turning 66) the hip gets a little sore, but not like before. It also doesn't hurt to sleep on that side. I have OA in hands, spine & neck, and I no longer have to take any medication for it. It's not entirely gone, of course, but it is not unmanageable now.

I'm sure you will have amazing results!

I have chronic pain from arthritis and damage done to my knees from years of spirts than years of being overweight. The weightloss helped a lot but due to the very high mileage I hiked this past year I have completely wore my knee out and now require a knee replacement. However i’m use to pain and will try and hold off to this fall or next. I get injections n my back, knees, neck and see a chiropractor. Loosing weight will help tremendously by taking the weight off your joints and stop your weight from being the cause of your increased damage. It will allow you to do way more physical exercise plus allow you to have a replacement surgery and having a healthy weight will make your replacements last longer. Thanks Tamera, I know what it's like having a bad knee and hips from years of heavy weight lifting and between my age and weight they won't even consider replacement now. So with the surgery I should get some relief. Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.
