    Default Newbie with a question

    Hi there,

I am seeing the shrink today as I speed towards my sleeve surgery. My biggest fear is the reflux and feeling sick after surgery. I am committed to changing my life style but feeling sick all the time after the surgery, even 6 months after, sounds bad.

Can you give me any words of wisdom? I am not a great pill taker.

    Thanks everyone,

    Michelle

Every person body responds differently after the surgery. For me, I didn't have any reflux just slight nausea and a little gas but the medicine provided after the procedure took care of that. The only way I can see a person being sick 6 months post op is if they overeat or eat something their new system doesn't agree with. Follow the instructions that are given to you by your doctor and you will be fine.

2 hours immediately after your surgery, WALK WALK WALK WALK every hour! This help get rid of the gas that you will experience following the procedure. Mine wasn't as bad as others, I just kept burping. The doctors try to remove as much as the can but of course they can't get rid of it all.

As for as pills, I have the bariatric advantage vitamins which are mostly chewable!

Everyone is different. I never got sick. Never threw up. I had no problems following the program, getting in my liquids and protein, starting foods when permitted. It was easy. So don't assume you are going to be sick when you may not be. Hope you'll be like me and have the time of your life getting healthy and small. It really is so much fun!

I only had some nausea in the first week. My surgeon sent me home with a liquid anti nausea. After that, I only felt sick if I ate too fast or too much. Usually just a foamy feeling in my mouth. Annie calls it Toad Froth. LOL. I never had any issues with different foods. I can eat anything. It is the best thing I ever did. As for pills, you will have to take pills to stay healthy post op. You can take liquid or dissolvable versions. I take gummy ones as most multi vitamins make me burp up the flavor. (They did this pre op as well so it is not a new thing.)

I feel ya on hearing some people are feeling so sick - it scared me for some time too. But I decided that people tend to complain more when things are bad than maybe the people who are feeling good posting about how good they feel. The people feeling good are out living life and being happy being thin!! I'm 13 days from my sleeve and hoping I'll be feeling good and wish that for you too!

I am fortunate I did not have any problems with nausea at all. I made a point to mention to the anesthesiologist that I would rather be in pain than be nauseous and she adjusted the drugs. I am please to say I was not in pain nor nauseous. I am 1 month out and have not had any nausea. My incisions are healing nicely - I put Mederma on during the day and Aquaphor on in the evenings. I had a hiatal hernia that was identified during my upper endoscopy prior to the sleeve surgery. My doc repaired this during the sleeve procedure. I was previously prescribed Pantoprazole 40mg for acid reflux and since the surgery I have not had to take the medication. So far my acid reflux has seemed to improve. I am still on soft food you can cut with a fork but so far so good! Wishing you the best with your journey!

Hi there! Congrats on moving toward your goal!

I personally have never had reflux, and just one instance of nausea the day after surgery but they just gave me a dose of anti-nausea meds and it was gone within seconds.

Haven't had any issues except for slight pain after accidentally eating too fast or having one bite too many. I've found that walking after eating helps in those instances.

    Good luck!

My doctor gave me that anti-nausea pills just in case and I was on the anti-gas pills for the first month. The only time I've felt sick is when my head told me I wanted a taste of pie with whipped cream and my new stomach told me that dairy and sugar were no longer my friends.

At this point I can eat anything, but carbs and sugar really don't set well with me which I consider a miracle because they were my addictions pre-op. One thing I have noticed is if I become constipated (it happens when you are eating so much protein if you don't keep up the liquids & fiber) my stomach is less able to handle whatever comes along. But my husband always comments on how great it is that I can eat "anything" just so much less of it. We often choose the same food at a restaurant but I'll either get the appetizer portion or I'll eat 1/3 of the entree and take the rest home.

I was one of the lucky ones, recovery was quick and uncomplicated. Worst was the sickenly sweet protein drinks-egg drop soup was a life saver. Never regretted my decision. 5 yrs out and weight easy to maintain.
