During the pre-op diet can you still have coffee? How about afterwards? I start my pre-op diet tomorrow. Thank you in advance!
I would check with your doctor's office. They all seem to have their own set of guidelines. I was allowed 1 cup of coffee a day but I'm not a big coffee drinker so I just did not have any.
So I have heard of people being told no caffeine during pre op and for a bit of time post op. I never had to give it up. I did drink it the whole time and never had any issues. I only tolerated warm/room temp liquids immediately post op and I would make my latte every day with espresso and Fairlife high protein fat free milk. I don't know if I would have survived without it. LOL. And the sad thing is I could totally drink it for flavor....caffeine does not wake me up or give me energy. I can literally drink espresso before bed and have no issues sleeping. Best bet though is to ask your surgeon because they all have their own rules.
After surgery I was told one cup a day, which In enjoyed since day one. I think the only reason is caffeine is limited at first is it can lead to dehydration, but if you're drinking enough, that shouldn't be a problem. Now after almost 5 years it's more like 3 cups a day!
I waited a bit, and do decaf. Add Premier Protein shake to get in nutrition. But I also watch my fluids.
Another thing to stay away from is putting sugar in your coffee.
I didn’t drink coffee during the pre op phase. I started drinking coffee about 8 weeks post op. I haven’t had problems with it. I love my morning cup of coffee. I put my chocolate protein shake with sf peppermint syrup in it sometimes or coconut milk or half in half with honey. So yummy with a good coffee blend. Good advice to check with your doctor. Good luck to you. It’s an amazing ride your about to start
I had no restrictions re coffee, in fact if I couldn't have a coffee (with added protein powder) I would 1. not have reached my protein goals in the early days and 2. gone completely mad (at work) lol
I drink up to 3 instant coffee's at work a day, sometimes a full milk latte thrown in
I managed to taper down using decaf on the pre-op diet. Post op I drank decaf for about a month and then went back to the real thing. Mixing coffee (decaf or regular) with protein drinks was the only way I could tolerate the sweetness. My doctor said as long as the acid in the coffee didn't bother my tummy I'd be fine.
