    Default Thoughts on yearly check-ups

I recently had my yearly check up. Bloodwork and vitals are all normal now. Yay!! I have lost 85 pounds. Yay!!! I feel like a whole new person, am so happy, and have no doubt that I can maintain this lifestyle. Here's my question. Can a PCP order the same lab work and blood work that a Bariatric Doc can, so that I can eventually receive all of my care from just my PCP? I know it probably depends on individual doctors and insurance "rules" but was just looking for any feedback from those of you who are able to comment. I would never put my health at risk, but two doctor visits within weeks of each other seems redundant. Will also discuss this with my new PCP in a few weeks to get her view on this issue. Also, for those of you that are on the fence or a struggling with the process of getting sleeved, persevere and follow through. If you put in the work, it will change your life completely!!!!! It is soooo worth it!!

Yes, a PCP can order the same blood work as a bariatric surgeon. In fact, the majority of the people who had surgery in Mexico receive their blood work orders and bariatric aftercare from their PCPs here in the states.

Nonetheless, the aftercare will be different due to the "Jack of all trades, Master of none" mentality of PCPs. As long as you realize that your PCP is no bariatric expert, you should be fine.

For instance, a typical PCP will prescribe cholesterol-lowering medication to recent bariatric surgery patients without realizing that transient elevations in cholesterol are normal in the weight loss phase (it's called transient hypercholesterolemia). Many PCPs also subscribe to the low-fat/moderate carb way of eating.

    Good luck to you.
