    Default The protein shake matters

    For me it does.

I had to stop drinking my normal protein shake. The horror! I'm having my breast lift in two days, and was required to stop drinking any energy drinks 2 weeks prior to surgery. My regular protein shake is Monster muscle protein energy, so that counts. I called shenanigans, and decided I would compromise. I went with a week.

So anyway, I quit last Friday. It was a sad day. In its place I went with Premier caramel. It's ok in terms of taste. In terms of filling me up or holding off hunger HAH! No. Holy crap, I am soooooo hungry. With my Monster, I almost never ate food until dinner, they kept me so full. With the Premier, I'm eating food before I even finish the last sip of the shake. I also bought the Premier clear tropical punch drinks. I love them! I'm drinking them like water. (They're 90 calories 1 carb 20 protein) I am drinking 2 of them a day, but they also do not make me feel any type of hunger control. So, on the bright side, I'm getting in crap tons of protein each day. On the downside, I've gained about 5 or 6 pounds since last Friday.

I had planned to not go back to the Monster shakes after surgery since they're pretty expensive and I'll just have to come off them again for the next surgery. However, I cannot deal with the constant hunger and the weight gain that I'm experiencing from the Premier products.

I know a lot of people here drink the Premier. Do you guys also feel like you could eat your own leg? I would have never successfully lost my weight had that been my protein shake from the beginning. Muscle Milk was my go to for the first year.

I am on the high protein, low carb pre-op diet right now. I am gradually training myself to prepare for the liquid only diet I have to start next week. I am drinking protein shakes in the morning & afternoon and eating dinner in the evening. I am using Whey protein powder mixed with water. I can say I am not hungry until dinner time with them. Today I tried something different, an Atkins cookies and crème shake for lunch and I am STARVING right now (not actually starving but hangry lol) so I think they make a difference also. I don't know post-op but at least pre-op for me I can tell a difference

Well crap! I just ordered a bunch of Premier Protein drinks to replenish my supply. I will get a few of the Muscle Milk to try. I have found that I am either hungry or nauseous right after finishing them. I may be drinking them too fast and that could be the problem too. It is hard for me to distinguish between true hunger, head hunger and nausea. I have a super sensitive stomach so everything makes me feel nauseous. I am a lot of fun on a boat... NOT :-)

Kerry, do not base yours off of mine. We are all so different. This is my first experience with premier. SO MANY people on here use them. I could very well be looking for any excuse to go back to my Monster protein. I am curious though if anyone else has had an experience like mine with the premier making them hungry. Or maybe I'm just going through a growth spurt ;-)

Oh never mind. I see that you say you do feel hungry after finishing yours. Forgive me for missing that part. I'm busy stuffing my face. I feel you on the whole boat thing, I can't even think about boats without getting nauseated. I have wimpy belly too.

Justsillyme, your surgery is close! The hunger will be so much easier to manage afterwards. A couple of bites, and you're set. It still blows my mind 3.5 years later.

I'm just wonder why you are still drinking protien shakes? Aren't you getting enough protien from food being so far out of surgery? I'm not being mean I'm genuinely curious. I don't drink them anymore. Thanks!

Super excited for your boob surgery...and a little jealous!!! Wishing you s speedy recovery!

Cody, I like protein shakes. I love the Monster protein shake. I haven't been able to cut my addiction to it. Now when it came down to my surgery I had to stop it because of the energy portion of it. But... my surgeon also requires me to have 3 protein drinks a day for this surgery, so I had to find a replacement.

I've never been a big breakfast or lunch eater before or after WLS. I just don't like to eat before dinner. Drinking a protein shake helps make sure I get in what I need. Sometimes I will have one for lunch too. However, over probably the last year I've not been making it to dinner before I need to eat. I've been eating more of a late lunch around 2.

Lots of people drink protein shakes. They aren't just for WLS patients.

The Premier always made me feel nauseous too. I use the EAS Advant Edge. I actually need food to feel full. I drink 1 protein shake most days just for the extra protein/fluids. I have no issues maintaining my weight loss so far. But solid meat is what keeps me full.

I use the protein drinks for breakfast because I don't like to eat when I first wake up and they are handy when I am on the go all day. I will look into the EAS ones. I see them everywhere. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you Katrina. I guess every body is different with what it requries to feel full. I need solid protien to make full. I'm not anti-protien shakes. They are wonderful in a pinch for me I just prefer to eat my protien.
