    Default Question about grits????

Ive been meaning to ask this for ages... all you southern gals and guys can tell me this. What is grits?? I heard you can have them with cheese? Are they like steel cut oats? I have no idea but I've always wanted to know. Last time I asked a question like this I got lots of info about the thanksgiving sweet potato and marshmallow hot mess. It fascinated and horrified me for days!!! Tell me all about the grits! :-)

Grits come from the hominy corn and not the yellow corn we normally eat. It is allowed to dry and run through a grits mill that chips it into the small flakes we call grits.

As someone who has moved 14 times, I've lived in the South twice but never acquired a taste for them.

I was wondering the same thing. I put them in my MFP app this weekend and they came up with zero carbs so I didn't know if that was a fluke or not. I ate them and actually enjoyed them a lot! I was thinking that would be a good option for after surgery when allowed.

I'm sure they would count as a soft/mushy food, as they are a finer consistency than something like oatmeal. More like Cream of Wheat.

Grits... Well there is no in between with grits. Either you love them or they taste like wallpaper paste to you. As a Southerner awhhhlll Mah life :-) I know people that dearly love them. I really don't care for them unless they have cheese or butter on them. In which case, I would rather have oatmeal. The best grits I have ever had was on an airplane, oddly enough. Grits plain are not very palatable. It is what is put on them that make them good. Soooo... Absolutely try them and decide for yourself. Just make sure there is something you like on them.

    And that's my 2 cents :-)

I got grits on my meal tray the day after surgery. They were dried out into a circular brick that didn't indent when I pressed on it. I really hope that's not how they're supposed to be served!

Steel cut oats are to grits as tiramisu is to instant vanilla pudding.

I'm from Mississippi, and that's all you need to know about grits.

    SHRIMP AND GRITS

    That will be all.

I eat my grits with butter, salt, and pepper. Some eat them with butter and sugar. Might as well have cream of wheat.

Next to shrimp and grits, cheese grits are my favorite.

Shrimp and grits is a very “Gulf Coast” thing. Grits is just Southern. The shrimp has to fresh caught. deveining is the secret.

Stacey.....since you live in a world class shrimp area, you should definitely look up a good shrimp and grits recipe and get after it. I bet you like it.

I didn't know you were from Mississippi. We lived in West Point 6 years. Never really fit in.

My mouth is watering just thinking about them. Over the years I have tried grits from time to time and did not like them. They tasted very grainy and without flavor. Then In North Carolina I had tasted shrimp and grits and oh my were they wonderful!!! The grits were cheesy and creamy not grainy at all and the shrimp on the grits added the perfect touch. I'm on my last day of my 2 weeks of liquid diet with surgery in the morning so I having been thinking about food a lot today. If you get a chance try them I think you will like them if they are smooth, creamy and flavorful.
