    Default Calories

    Hi All,

I'm a little over two months out and I haven't had any troubles with any foods. It's actually a little alarming how normal things feel. I've read a lot of posts on this site from the people who have had long term success talking about how they track everything (which is something that I've been thinking about starting since I'm having such an easy time getting foods down and I want to be sure I'm staying on track). I was wondering what people generally shoot for in terms of daily calorie intake? My nutritionist was never very specific about anything other than protein and water intake goals and eating everything in order when you have room for it: protein, veggies, fruit, carbs.

Thanks to everyone for your help! I am on this site daily and have found so much support and help from it both before and after my surgery.

I'm 9 months out and have already gone below my goal weight and am treading into the maintenance phase. I have around 1300 to 1600 calories a day. My protien ranges from 120 to 150 grams a day. I can eat 5 oz of chicken breast with no problem. So I'm very careful on what I chose to eat! I haven't really eaten to many veggies yet or fruits. I know I need to start but I'm focusing hard core on protien and fluids. Hope this helps a little.

Thank you so much for your response! You are doing amazing and you look great! If you don't mind me asking - what does a usual day of eating look like for you? How do you manage to get that much protein in? I am generally still only getting between 60 and 70 grams.

I am interested in learning more about this as well. I can get in 80g of protein and 60oz of hydrating fluids daily but as I am able to progress, I want to be prepared for when I am able add soft foods.

My nutritionist never told me to count calories. I had to eat protein first, then veggies, then a small amount of carbs if room. I had a protein and liquid requirement to meet each day. It worked for me. Others track with great success, I guess it depends on what works for you. I am not a tracker.

HMaryn, you can read my First Surgiversary post to find out how much I ate during Year One and the advice I got from my surgeon's office about all that -- and how it turned out for me.

You can also read my Second and Third Surgiversary posts to see how much I went on to eat during those years -- and how all that turned out for me.

(LInks to those posts are at the bottom of my signature block below.)

    Very best wishes to you!

I make my own chai tea and drink it 3x a day with soy milk for total of 31 grams of protien.
Breakfast 1.5 pouch of tuna (25 grams of protien)
Lunch 5 to 5.5 oz of chicken breast (38 to 42)
    Dinner same

I mix it up with other protien like beef or pork but I mostly have chicken and tuna. I love chicken fajitas! I use some colored peppers and onions and black beans, no tortillas. I live off of that. When it is mixed I usually have 4.8 to 5 oz of chicken then the rest makes up the weight of 5.5. I still weigh everything.

I get a lot of my calories from the soy milk. That alone is
    450. Then I also drink sugar free crystal lite and that has calories too. I make sure I write everything down. It works for me.

I have taken the best from sraebaer, Ann2, tinman and Cody as far as eating.
    1. I track everything; if I ere regarding portion, its on the short side, like when I'm out with friends.
    2. Protein first.....
    3. Vegetables - working on it
    4. Carbs -- I allow 1 bag of Jolly Time 100 microwave popcorn periodically -- pretty empty calories, but it soothes my soul I may have 1/2 piece of sprouted mountain spring bread, which is a very dense, nutrient rich choice. I have had a regular slice (I mean tiny regular thin pizza crust) of a "light" cheese piece of pizza, but normally only when my kids are all home. I do have oatmeal with protein powder or plain greek yogurt, or 1/4 C grits (I'm in the South) with no fat cheddar. Oh, and I bake a corn tortilla or a carb balance whole wheat one, and use them 1/4 at a time. BUT only after protein is met.

I am at 900 calories, working up to 1,000 taking Ann's advice about protein first - I try for 100 grams a day first.

I add Premier Protein shake to my coffee, which means I can have 3 cups of coffee (half decaf) and still get 30 grams of protein in. So it helps hit fluid & protein for me.

I usually have an Oikos Triple Zero yogurt because I love the caramel salt & the coconut ones.

Struggle: eating way too fast, which causes "froth" or throwing up. About every 4 days or so, I bolt my food. The I don't want to eat for a few hours. But learning.

And just starting on maintenance, so not sure what that will look like.

The practice/NUT does not want us to count calories, but to have 3 4 ounce meals and 2 2 ounce snacks day. 70 gm of protein and 54 ounces of water. They say eat 2 bites of protein to every bite of veg and carbs eat carbs last. It works for me!

Never counted calories in the beginning. Just started using My Fitness Pal to track since I have been in maintenance for a while and don't want to blow it. The MFP tells you what to eat to maintain. As for you being in the losing phase, I would really just keep focusing on my protein and fluids. The rest will fall into place. And don't worry, I never had any issues with any foods either. Never had anything that made me sick unless I ate too much or too quickly.
