Default Blood clot in portal vein

I posted a few days ago that my husband had been admitted into the hospital with a blood clot in his intestines. After several scans and tests we found out it’s actually a blood clot in his portal vein leading to his liver. We were transferred to Huntsville Hospital and he will need to be cathed (hopefully today) through his neck and going into his liver. He’s still aggravated that he’s still trying to get over his sleeve surgery and his Dr has placed him back on clear liquids. The pain is unbearable at night. He hasn’t been home since Thursday. I went to the house to take care of a few things and get clean clothes and supplies. He’s mentally and physically at the breaking point now. He’s in constant pain due to the blood clot. Has anyone ever dealt with a portal vein blood clot after sleeve surgery? This is extremely rare.

    O honey, that is terrible.
I have never heard of that, but I know how painful an blood clot can be.
It's like having a heart attack, that does not go away.
When is he scheduled for the procedure?
My prayers are with you both.
Don't forget to take good care of yourself!
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

Thinking of you both and you're in the right place. He is not going to be feeling too fancy for a while but hopefully they get in very soon to remove the clot. Hang in there x

    Carla,
No, but he's in a good facility and our prayers and positive thoughts surround you both, and all the medical people who will help.

Thanks Dutch. I appreciate it. If not wasn’t for this painful clot he’d be doing fine. I know the pain you’re talking about. I had a blood clot after my sleeve but it was in the back of my left knee, and that was painful enough. I can’t imagine how bad he feels with it being so deep inside of him. He was doing well enough earlier to walk around. And praise The Lord he actually kept down some chicken broth. He’s exhausted and trying to sleep now. We haven’t seen a dr yet and we are waiting on an answer on when/if he’s gonna get his portal vein cathed. Thanks for keeping him in your thoughts and prayers. He needs them.

Thanks Stacy!!! I hope we get an answer today on the cath situation. He smiled when I told a joke this morning. I haven’t seen him laugh or smile in almost three weeks now and it got to me. It was nice for a moment not to see him in pain.

Annie you’re so right with the positive thoughts. He felt a little positive this morning and i took advantage of it and we took a walk around the hall a few times. We got back to the room and he asked for the blinds to be opened (he never asks for that). So hopefully today will be a good day. It’s night time when he starts to go down hill and the pain is too much to handle. Thank you SO MUCH for the prayers!

So sorry, but it sounds like he is being well taken care of. Hope things are back to normal soon!! Sending prayers.

I had to give myself shots every day after surgery to prevent blood clots. (I couldn't do it, hubby had to). I can't remember how many days of shots, maybe about 2 weeks.

Wow that sounds serious and painful. Wishing you both the best. I hope all goes well. Is there anything they can give him for the pain? Did they say what caused the clot? You both are in my prayers.

Hey everyone! I want to thank each and everyone of you for checking on him and ALL THE PRAYERS! They are greatly needed. Our surgeon talked to us yesterday and said he’s veerin away from the cath from the neck to the liver in favor of taking clot buster injections at home and being on warfarin treatments too. He said we could be released today or Monday but he has to have another ultrasound today for the final descision. Yesterday was a good day until last night. Night time is when the pain really kicks in. He slept most of the day thankfully. He was upmost of the night. Dr said thatvyes kt was a big clot that is blocking the vein going to the liver. HOWEVER, the liver IS getting plenty of blood flow from somewhere somehow. Liver tests came back better than they were by far. I’m not sure how it’s getting blood but Praise The Lord He’s got blood flow to it! Keep the prayers going for a good ultrasound, continuous flood flow to the liver, release day, and that his pain will go away! This is EXTREMELY RARE!

Glad to hear things are looking up! Hope he doesn't need the warfarin for long. My mom is on it for a-fib, and she has to have her blood tested 2-3 times a month and continually change dosage. It has bad side effects, like a continual cough, hair loss, etc. But it's keeping her alive!

*hugs!!!* thanks so much Dutch! Our dr came by early this morning and said that more than likely we are going home tomorrow. He went and had another ultrasound early this morning. I’ll be giving him clot busting injections at home as well as blood thinners. I hope the pain at night is more manageable than it was last night. It was rough on him. Thanks so much for the prayers!
