Default Talk about support and being in this together....

Hi all - sorry I have been MIA for a bit - I am busy packing and getting ready to move into a condo I just bought. Still waiting for my last nutrition class in March before I can get scheduled for surgery in April (I hope).

I hadn't really been telling many people about my upcoming surgery, but I did tell a couple of people at work. Well, one day, one of the nurses came up to me and wanted to ask me about a gastric sleeve (because I am a dietitian). I asked her if she knew I was having one, and she didn't. Then she told me that another nurse that we work with is ALSO going through the workup to have one done. They are looking at June and July for their dates.

In addition to them, I already knew that one of the care techs at another facility in our company had a sleeve a year ago, and she is doing wonderfully well. It made me happy to know that I would certainly not be going through this alone.....not only do I have you guys but I will have them as well, and they will have me. I am also going to give them each this website information..................

I am a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist but I have never practiced in the areas of bariatrics or weight loss. I am happy to offer ideas or tips, but please follow your own Nutritionist's advice - she is the expert in the area.

It is great knowing other people that have had it done. I found the same thing at work. I'm really close with my co-workers and they all know other people at work that have had it done. A couple of my mom's friends have children (30's, 40's) that are having it done. Heck, my best friend had her surgery 2 weeks before I did!

I think this surgery becoming very common.

    Good luck on your move!!

That's great that you're going to have real life people on the journey with you for support, but I think it sucks so much that people take it upon themselves to tell other people's business. I feel like it was not her place to tell you about your other nurse coworker going through the process too. That's been my biggest regret in telling people...They all take it upon themselves to tell anyone else. I dont mind people knowing, I just want to be the one to give the information.

Anyway, I hope you have a wonderfully uncomplicated, uneventful, successful experience. All the best to you.

I told most of my friends that I had a procedure to correct a hiatus hernia that was causing acid reflux, which was partly true. Every time I ate, the acid subdued. This was one of my principle reasons why I started to gain weight. It went undiagnosed for a very long time. In fact it wasn't until I had the endoscopy exam before my sleeve it showed up. I was in two minds to let the surgeon repair the hernia and see if I would improve, or continue with the plan to get sleeved. I asked my surgeon's opinion and also an independent gastroenterologist for her opinion, they both said I should have the sleeve.

So anyway, as far as my most of my friends think, I had a hernia repair which has reduced my appetite and I've been on a very strict diet ever since as it needs to heal.

That is what I told my friends as well since I had the hernia repair. I also said it was due to my ulcer....which was cut away with the rest of my belly. LOL. It was true...just neglected the sleeve part. I only told immediate family and 4 close friends. I don't feel like it is anyone else's business.

My sister was sleeved 5 years before me but she lives in England and I am in Texas so we don't get to discuss it much. (Although we do message about it sometimes.) I don't know anyone locally who has been sleeved. I get my support from this site.
