Default Question about Clear Liquid Protein options

Guys - gearing down to the start of festivities in about three weeks, and one of the high points (hah!) will be about 1 1/2 weeks of clear protein drinks. I haven't found them locally, but can purchase from Amazon easily enough. Two brands I've noticed that the doctor's office approve of is Premier Clear (Raspberry, Orange Mango) and Protein2O (Grape, Mixed Berry, Wild Cherry). Minimum order quantity for these is twelve. Has anyone used any of these, and how did they work? I'm having visions of something that tastes overly sweet or strange. Any other options anyone can recommend? The main gate is to shoot for 15 - 20 grams protein per serving, and minimal / no sugar. Help appreciated!! Thanks! Mike

Hi! I used Premier Protein Clear (tropical punch) after surgery. They are very sweet, but not horrible tasting (in my opinion). They, kind of weirdly, made my mouth feel really dried out. I only had to do clear liquids for 3 days after surgery, thankfully, but these weren’t too bad. I was also allowed to do bone broth, which has 9 grams of protein for a cup and is a nice alternative to the super sweet of the protein drink. Good luck!

    Hi,

I use Boost and Insure clear drinks post op. Could not stand the taste of the ISopure Clears.

I never had to drink only clear protein drinks. It's strange how all doctors are so different.

I would recommend going into GNC of the Vitamin Shoppe and buy ONE of whatever you can find. You don't want to purchase a case and find out you can't stand the taste. Some are pretty odd tasting. I could stomach the Isopure, but only orange flavor and diluted with a lot of ice. Good luck!

I have to admit that this is the first time I've heard of a "Clear" liquid diet. Most patients go on a liquid protein diet. I agree with sraebaer, don't buy lots of items, try them first and see if you like them. There are not that many clear choices.

    Good luck!

Way they've explained it to me, if I spring a leak or something goes wrong, clear liquids makes it easier for them to find and fix things in that first week. Fun for the whole family in the meantime. It'll be an adventure - I've done meal replacement shakes through the HMR diet program and those don't faze me, but clear liquids for eight days should be interesting. Thanks for the feedback, I'll be hitting GNC tomorrow.

It is interesting to me how similar yet different the pre-op instructions are. I have a 2 week liquid diet coming up next month prior to the day of surgery. The reason two different physicians gave me for the liquid diet is to shrink the liver and to put your body into ketosis. Best of luck to you on your new adventure! P.S. - Boost and Ensure on NOT on my approved list due to their sugar content per the nutritionist.

Have you looked into Genepro? You can get it on Amazon! It is a flavorless protein powder that you can mix into anything! Food or liquids, and it dissolves really good! It has 30g of protein per scoop. I used to add it to my juice or my protein shakes. I never tried it in plain water, so I am not sure how it would be. I am going through the process of getting approved for the sleeve and I will definitely get some more of the Genepro to use to help me get my protein in.

I am pre surgery but always look for ways to add protein to my day. I love the Protein2o (grape is the only one I've had). It does not have any gritty texture to it and tastes like sugar free koolaid. I have switched back to powder (Natural Factors) for now since Protein2o ends up being about $2 a bottle which is more than I am used to spending on a daily habit.

I was on full liquids so I was not stuck doing clear protein drinks. I did try the Isopure clear protein drinks and found them to be nasty. I ended up dumping them.

Thanks for the additional ideas. I ended up visiting GNC this weekend, and the salesperson was pretty helpful with several ideas. I picked up a couple of the clear ISOPure protein drinks to try, and he also recommended a clear protein powder to try. I have not yet done the taste testing (am afraid it'll taste nasty!) but it's on the to do list this week. On a positive note, the GNC person said if the protein powder made me gag, to bring it back and they could exchange for some other product. I was happy to discover they also make a meal replacement shake that tastes pretty good which I can use along with two other shakes that I've already stocked up on.

Have to admit, it's daunting thinking what's coming as the clock ticks down, but really appreciate everyone's support. Knowing others have gone through this and been successful really helps a lot!
