Default OTC meds long after surgery

So in all of my research and reviewing paperwork - tylenol is listed as the go-to OTC pain reliever. most say to go easy on these items for the first few months - then the info seems to drop off.

im now almost 3 years out and took some aleve and it seems to work. saw somewhere that this is bad (but only referenced so because aleve and advil can be harder on your stomach) what has been your experiences?

They say no NSAIDS for us forever and ever and ever. They are generally rough on anyone's stomach. We have less stomach surface making them even more dangerous for us. I just read this recently as my neurologist prescribed Toradol since I cannot take tramadol with my migraine medication. I have not taken it as it seems way too risky. I have, however, taken plenty of Goody's powders despite them being a big no no.

They say that it is bad for gastric patients since it can cause ulcers. It is worse for bypass patients than sleeve patients. We can tolerate it a bit more but it is still bad for us.

I just posted this to answer another person's question, but my doctor said I could take NSAIDS for a short time in emergencies, as long as it was food and with a Prolosec. But I did that one time before a ski trip (I have sucky knees) and got SO SICK I thought I would die. I felt like I was in labor the cramping was so bad. I'm happy to skip NSAIDS for the rest of my life. I rarely took them anyways.

NSAIDS can be really dangerous for people without bariatric surgery too; my sister-in-law didn't take many for an injury and ended up in the hospital in serious condition with a bleeding ulcer. She is young and healthy.

Too bad the sleeve doesn't cure EVERYTHING. I still can't sleep, still need meds for cholesterol, but who cares. I'm happy to be healthy and at a normal weight.

Wow, no one ever mentioned no advil to me. I had my sleeve in December and have taken advil a couple of times recently for headaches with no trouble but I will stop taking them now! Yeesh, thanks for the info!

i wonder if this is a YMMV type thing ... i haven't had a problem with advil or aleve (well once with aleve but i was on an empty stomach) - but I've never had issues with drugs even before sleeve.

sleep has always been a problem for me. im working on getting off those meds now.

off the cholesterol meds - numbers a little higher, but not high enough to go back on meds.

according to the BMI charts, i am still overweight (IIRC 192 is the highest normal bmi)- but i am happy with my size
