    Default Dumping syndrome

I have twins and this morning I made them pancakes for breakfast. My son likes them with banana and Nutella (fine choice if you ask me) and my daughter likes the old fashioned lemon juice and sugar.

So I had just squeezed the lemon on her pancake and dipped a wet teaspoon into the sugar jar and sprinkled her pancake. Without even thinking I popped the sugar coated teaspoon into my mouth, and then thought, "Oh no, what did I just do!"

    Here's what happened......

Within 10 minutes my stomach went into spasm and I felt like vomiting, although as it was empty, I just retched. The discomfort then traveled down into my belly and I started to feel quite unwell. I then started having cold sweats and hot flushes. And within 30 minutes I had to find a toilet with quite some degree of urgency.

After about an hour I started to perk up again.

Oh boy, I don't want to repeat that again!

I read that it's rare for sleeved patients to suffer from dumping syndrome, but not unheard of.

Ohhhh Beeza... it's a nasty business isn't it. I have had it once, in a bar! It was an extremely unpleasant experience, Luckily it was very quiet and the toilets were empty and my partner is a doctor and could hold me up on the toilet as I sweated and heaved and thought i was going to die! I think it was from some oily deli cheese but it's random and I don't really have any idea what it was. It only happened once so theres the good news. Apart from that I have had one urgent feeling of diahorrea out of nowhere, oh actually twice, once when out, and once indoors.
In terms of the dumping thing I was actually really upset and fearful of eating again, but some sensible people had words with me, and I just tried everything new at home.
Dumping does happen to sleeved patients (incidently I was 3 week out when that happened) but I think it's rare and more likely at the beginning of recovery. For me it never happened again so far. Sorry it happened for you but it may never happen again.

Yep, sugar & newly sleeved tummies are a bad combo. I also had a problem with dairy early on (didn't know it at first)so my big mistake was a spoonful of whipped cream that I paid for dearly. Can't even look at the cans in the grocery now without feeling queasy.

Yes, it happens...just need to figure out what triggers it. Dairy for me so I really watch the kind of dairy. Can eat cheddar but not cream cheese. Yogurt makes me feel like I am going to pass out.

I guess I’ll have to count myself lucky, I’ve never had that happen to me. Sounds terrible though!

That sounds ghastly Beeza. The only issue I have had was with fresh cooked salmon. It was the third time I had eaten it since being sleeved and it was not a good experience. Can't look at the stuff now....and it used to be my favourite fish

Even though they say it is uncommon to have dumping syndrome with sleeved bellies (it is more a bypass issue) it does happen. I had it happen twice when I was newly sleeved. The first time was absolutely the worst. The second episode was not as bad. Good thing is that is shouldn't be a normal occurrence.
