Default Are there things that you will never be able to eat again?

I am just starting pre op diet for surgery coming up in 2 weeks. I've lost about 45 pounds by myself since July 1 and truly love food. I'm committed to losing the weight and decided to go the sleeve route. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. I've read a lot and seen so many posts on here. I know I need to change my eating habits which I have pretty much already. I'm rarely hungry. I also am committed to the special diet and adjustment to eating very little immediately following surgery and most likely for the next 6 months. My concern is that there will be foods that I will just never be able to eat again at all because them making me sick. Has anyone experienced that? For example, will I ever be able to eat a truffle? or a piece of pie or cake? Will certain foods just have to be eliminated forever?

Well Ann always says that what you will eat at first is very different to what you will be able to eat in the future. I have tried bread and rice on 2 different occasions and it was like an elephant jumped on my chest and some horrible kind of vomity noises. I'm staying away from carbs generally, the rice was on an eel sushi which I love and the bread was just an absent minded moment.
If I could never eat it again I don't care, I'd happily live on seafood!

Lesa2, not so far for me. Yes, there were things I couldn't eat early on. And there were things I chose not to eat during my weight losing phases. And there are things I now eat only rarely because I really like weighing 130 pounds.

But there's nothing at all I cannot eat. And it all tastes delicious.

At only 4 months out, I really don't have enough experience to add anything useful...except, as Edie said, some things are not as happy with me as others. And it varies. I have an issue with "homemade" eggs (that is, our neighbor has chickens) vs store eggs. The first makes me ill, the second I tolerate well. No idea why.

I had sushi this weekend, and it was fine. I had a couple of bites of rice the next day, without sushi and was ill. So I think in the beginning it's just sort of a watching/listening thing.

I can eat a small amount of SkinnyPop popcorn; not trying sugar things yet because my skin is so fabulous since I don't have sugar and vanity trumps sugar for me, I guess.

The folks on here have such wonderfull supportive, helpful information. Glad you're here.

I am still having trouble with eggs.
For some reason they are not compatible with me anymore...
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

    No. No. Just no.

You will be able to eat anything. (Some people get sick from some foods, but my stomach must be a rock, nothing EVER made me sick, even early on.) That being said, you are going to eat the right things most of the time, but a piece of candy or pizza once in a while probably won't make any difference with your weight loss. Just don't make a habit of it. I'm maintaining, and weigh myself every day to be sure I stay on track. 2 pounds below goal this morning.

Early on I seemed to have different issues with some things but they went away over time. One was with white fish, it just felt like it would get stuck. My Dr was even surprised with that one. Now I can eat most things. I generally don't really eat carbs, but the times I've tried a bite of bread it also feels like it's not going down and getting stuck. Once it's down if feels like a brick. I'm still working on losing weight so I choose not to eat the things you've mentioned. I still eat protein first and usually get full on my protein.

Seafood is my life! Ahi tuna is my favorite, but salmon, shrimp, anything from the sea is loved by my tummy. And as my nutritionist says, the fewer legs the better.

No. I "can" eat anything I want. I choose not to. Also, some things I used to crave and love no longer appeal to me. I was a fettuchine alfredo junkie prior to my sleeve. Now, I can eat it, but it doesn't taste the same, and the high fat content doesn't sit well in my new stomach.

Nothing however has made me sick or anything like that. Some things just don't go down well (rice, pasta, bread).

Hope this helps and answers your question!

in the beginning some things made me feel sick, 'heavy food' and ice cream, for example, was a favorite that after I was sleeved just wasn't a good taste.
So in the beginning just stick to the docs orders. as time went by for me I could eat whatever
    3 years out, I can eat pie...but only a few bites. I can eat anything. but I shouldn't :-)
    sleeved 12/30/14 @255lbs Goal 140lbs
    3/3/15- 208lbs 6/14/15- 163lbs
    lost 92lbs in 1st 6mo
    9/10/15- 139 1/5/2016 - 128lbs
    lost 128lbs in 1 year
    4/4/16 - 123lbs 7/4/16 - 129lbs 12/3/16- 130
    still 128lb loss@2 year mark-11lbs below goal
gained 13lbs by 3 year mark weighing 142lbs
Gained up to 158 by 3 years 3 months!
    3.5 years back to 142
    hoping to stay between 140lbs-145lbs
4 years hanging in between 145 and 150
5 year mark! ugh! Up to 160! Time to get back track!

I have no issues eating anything. I work out a lot so I can have some sweets on occasion. I do not over do it. The key is moderation. I weigh myself daily to make sure I do not gain weight by eating mindlessly. I do not track calories. I do eat mindfully, though, and focus on giving my body healthy foods.

As someone that is 8 years post op & recently resleeved (due to my original sleeve being a little too big) I’m here to tell you that you’ll be fully capable of eating whatever you want within 2 years. Although I’ve learned that I developed a gluten sensitivity following my 2009 VSG. However that sensitivity doesn’t hinder my ability to crave or indulge on higher carb/higher calorie/slider foods.

With that said, I strongly recommend ALL “newbies” to take full advantage of your tool now!! You have approximately an 18 months honeymoon period of “effortless” weight loss. So during that time yes you’re less likely to experience cravings & hunger pangs — but that doesn’t last forever & THEY WILL RETURN!! This surgery only (temporarily) limits your ability to consume larger quantities, not necessarily WHAT you can eat.

(About me: I lost approximately 170 lbs in 12 months, I worked out twice a day & I was on top of the world. Now fast forward to 7 years post op & a 70 lb regain, I learned I graze eat when under stress. So although I wasn’t eating horribly, I was taking in too many calories by continuously “snacking” all day vs eating 3 full meals. I wanted to share this because I don’t want people to think that I needed a revision due to gross negligence, I needed it because: 1) my sleeve was too big & 2) because I never fully learned new coping skills when it came to those stressors known as life )

As someone that has traveled down this road before, I wish I’d known then what I know now. And I’d also advise you to start looking for recipe alternatives to some of your favorite meals or food items vs tempting fate & trying to eat those same foods that landed us all in this place.

I hope sharing my experience helped & didn’t come across as long winded or preachy.
