    Default Refused gastric sleeve

I am gutted, I have received an email saying I dont qualify for a gastric sleeve. My Bmi is 37.3 I am 5ft 2 and my heaviest at 14st 7lbs last I weighed but have no co morbidity's. I have nearly 5 stone to lose before I am in a normal BMI range. I dont know what to do, I am devastated. I am in the UK and was hoping to go to Prague or Belguim.

Many people without insurance go to Mexico where the surgery is about 1/3 to 1/4 of the cost of doing it in the states. I don't think they are as strict with the rules regarding BMI in Mexico. (I'm sure people who have done it will chime in). Good luck, and sorry about the refusal.

    Hi Oh My Love

I am so sorry to hear this.
I am very similar weight and height as you are.
I was pleasantly surprised to be allowed to have the op.

I am due my op in March, I do have to pay for it though.
Its not that expensive although its been costly enough for me to have to wait and save up to have it done.
I am not sure where you live.
Could you consider looking elsewhere to have the sleeve done?
Even if you have to travel.
I am in a country that as long as I pay for it all Doctors agreed my height and weight were accepted for surgery.
There are people in my hospital that flew from their country to have the surgery too.
So just wanting to say to you maybe you can look at this in another way.

oh man!! My BMI was right at 40, which was the minimum requirement to get sleeved. I know a lot of people go to Mexico, I've heard good things, but in my personal case I wouldn't have been able to afford it.
Don't give up, the sleeve is great because it's stops us from eating too much, but you can still loose weight without it. If you got sleeved you'd have to stop eating certain things, you would have to measure out a small amount of food to eat, focusing on protein and water....you can still do all of that and loose weight. It will be hard but if you can't get the surgery don't give up.
explore all your options, if mexico is an option you'll probably find someone on this site that has surgery the same time. If you can't afford it maybe you can set up a go fund me page.

I wish you the best of luck!

Not sure how this works where you are, but you can do an appeal with your insurance at least in the US. Gain some weight, then go back, work with a doctor who could note something that would improve after gastric surgery; any or all of these processes might help. Good luck!

I'm in the US. I qualified for the sleeve with a 37 BMI although I did have one comorbid condition of elevated cholesterol.

I was advised by a patient advocate at the surgical practice to gain enough weight to attain a BMI of 40 if I had no comorbid conditions. For me this happened rapidly...my BMI was 41 on the day of surgery.

I stuck little weights in my bra and pockets and shoes to make sure I qualified. Turns out I didn't need them to qualify. But I was focused on the prize. Big-time.

BTW, that's a secret, so don't tell anyone.

    Now I am confused.
I was under the impression you wre going to pay for the surgery yourself.
Is that no longer the case?
Because if so, you can just have the surgery in Belgium, you won't be refused there, with that BMI.
I dont know anything about Prague.
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

If you only have a small amount of weight to loose why not eat healthy and exercise and loose it on your own. I was able to loose 22lbs before surgery making a change but i had 160+ pounds to go and major health issues. This is major surgery and you dont have much to loose. You can do it. This surgery at any weight is still work and not an easy fix. You probably can pay cash in Mexico or another country. I’m sorry i don’t like the idea of putting weight on. Your so close you can do it on your own. i would work with a nutritionist and counselor if I were you. all the best.

Look into the rules for nearby countries. I had to gain 10 lbs to qualify for my insurance to pay for it. So worth it.

How frustrating for you! I know someone who did go to Mexico and told me the hospitals and clinics were like 5 star hotels.... He also had a very good outcome.

There is some good advice here. Don't give up easily

I found this UK (I think) girl, who was sleeved in Prague.
    Maybe you can contact her?

IIt seems I cannot post URL's... or maybe I am doing it wrong...
