Default Did your doc put you on PPIs after surgery?

My doctor prescribed a Proton Pump Inhibitor called Tecta after my surgery. It is usually prescribed for acid reflux and GERD. I never suffered from it before, but I think he prescribed it as a precaution to aid the stomach to heal with minimal acid.

I hope I don't have to be on them for long. I'm having a few side effects. The skin on my hands has become quite tender, almost like dermatitis and I had tiny little water blisters on them. Also, my libido is totally non-existent.

Nearly three week out from surgery, I'm hoping I can stop taking the pills. Obviously I will consult with my doc, just wondering if any others were prescribed PPIs.

I was put on acid reflux meds for the first 30 days after surgery. I think my doctor does it for everyone (as I have never had acid reflux.) After 30 days I never had them again.

Yes, it's common for the first 30 days. You should let your doctor know if you're having side effects. There are a couple of different formulations that can be used to accomplish the same thing so maybe you need a different prescription.

It’s not just prescribed to reduce stomach acid. It’s also prescribed to help with stomach inflammation which mimics hunger pains and growling. I took Prevacid for 4months. Ive done a 14 day course prn for persistent heartburn twice in a year. Be sure you contact your doctor before you stop. Good luck

I'm on them. The doc said I could come off after a month if I want but up to me so I've just carried on taking them. No side effects for me. The libido thang might be to do with hormones which are sometimes knocked about a bit after surgery :-)

I was on Pepscid for a month. I think i took it longer but it was not intentional or needed.

Yup. You should take your PPIs. For all the reasons listed above.

I wouldn't necessarily assume the symptoms you're complaining of are caused by the PPIs. You've just gone through and are going through a whole lot of other assaults on the body. There's a lot going on right now.

My surgeon did not put me on any after surgery. It wasn't until after a couple of hospital admissions that I was started on prescription Protonix. I am one of the unfortunate ones that cannot come off of mine. If I miss a dose even by a few hours I'm in agony for at least a day until it catches back up. It's a bummer, but what can you do.

I had to take antacids post op for about 2-3 months. Most doctors will prescribe one but I used the OTC Prilosec. You can stop taking them and see if you need them or not. It is not like your life depends on being on them. It is often prescribed as a precaution.

My Dr. gave me Omeprazole capsules and I am having a hard time taking the "crystals" as they make gag from the taste and they do not dissolve. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!
