Default For those of you that are diabetic

    Okay so long story -

While on the preop diet of liquids only my sugars were great. I had one episode of low. I was only taking the long term insulin. Then in the hospital my sugars skyrocketed up to 266!!! They were not too concerned and kept telling me it was normal. So now that I am home, 2 weeks post and on full liquid diet, my sugars are going crazy. Fasting is between 170 - 220. I take my insulin and 3 hours later it is 20 units higher. Hello, I am not eating anything with carbs. At night it is 140ish so I take long term and wake up to 220! I have never had my sugars so all over before. I was hoping to get off the insulin and have lost 32 pounds but this is crazy. Anyone else experience this?

    Thanks,
    Kimberly

My sugars were high immediately following the surgery. I was not taking any medicine for type 2 diabetes prior to surgery (I had been controlling them by diet and exercise). When I was in the hospital they gave me insulin for my blood sugar being to high (I objected to being given it). Once I was out of the hospital within 2 - 3 days my numbers were normal.

I no longer have diabetes! Or high blood pressure, or lower back pain, or sleep apnea, (the list goes on and on!!!)...........

I was an insulin Type 2 diabetic before surgery going on 8 years. My sugars were crazy afterwards also, it's the healing of the body. You're only drinking liquid, but you also just had major surgery and that wreaks havoc on the body. Keep testing and call the doc after a week or so, hopefully; you'll find them improving. Try not to stress over the numbers and concentrate on getting in the liquids as your body is going through lots of changes at this point. I know that's easier than said, but it will help. Good luck!

Wow. No, mine normalized pretty quickly and my first month lab work showed my trigylcerides had dropped from 295 to 93; my A1C despite spikes up and down, has always been "normal".

Just keep on, and adjust as your body adjusts. Its such a big change and it messes with our hormones and all our "innard" systems.
    Prayers for stabilizing!
