Default First 7 Days Clear Liquids - worried what to have

    Hi All,

I feel very nervous about the first stage more than anything else.
I live in Turkey and there is a language barrier, I am not fluent, I can't find out exactly what I should be having to drink the first 2 weeks on the clear liquids.

Just to say you can't buy food in the same way as you can world wide. ( I am British) I would find all sorts to have from the supermarkets in Europe.
Nothing here is ready made or sugar free or low cal. We have only in the last 4 years obtained tinned tomatoes!.

So everything is from Scratch. I am nervous about what I should be drinking in the clear liquid stage.

I also have tried to make broth and it tastes awful now feeling stressed, all they say is have protein water. I bought protein powder yesterday.
I am sure it will help in the future.

Can anyone help me. I am due surgery on March 2.
I really want to be ready.

    Thank You in Advance.

Hi Pudsley, love Turkey, but its been a while since I was there - 1993!! One of my favourite countries.

Apart from protein powder I was making everything from scratch, as I didn't like the processed artificially sweetened shakes etc.

See the post below for some good advice:

    https://www.gastricsleeve.com/forum/...t=66454&page=2

I also purchased a book online called 'Your complete guide to nutrition for weight loss surgery' it is not very contemporary (2013/14) but the recipes are great and may help you, at least come up with some good ideas.

I'm thinking some lovely ground meat (lamb/chick/beef Lahmacun/Kofte) for you less the bread. You'll need a good stick blender. With enough stock (I'm mainly using stock cubes) you can liquidize anything, then in puree stage just less stock. Lots of good yoghurt there to make drinks too.

If you can get collagen powder online too, its high in protein, the brand I have can be mixed in both hot and cold liquids, is tasteless, which is really convenient - it goes into all my liquid meals as a protein boost and my coffees.

You're not wrong about broth - yuck!! I haven't got too hang up about low fat/low cal. Good fats help me, stay full for longer.

Good luck, keep us updated on how you get along, happy to share receipes

Do you have your surgery in Turkey?
They will have a list of things you can have I suppose?
I had my surgery in Spain, but that was not as challenging, stock cubes are widely available.
But I am currently in Morocco for a couple of months and I have been looking around for "bariatric stuff".
That is more of a problem.
Don't you live near a big city, where are supermarkets?
Have some things send over from the UK?
    Order things online?
    Just offering some ideas...
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

    Hi Aussie Girl,

I did reply but it has not showed so I am writing again.

Thank You so much for the advice, I am feeling so much better about the clear liquid stage.
I can certainly use a mincer for meat for protein and a blender stick. I think I was thinking it got to be like flavoured water broth.
You know chicken water minus the chicken if you see what I mean.
I read that you have gone back to work already, Good Luck I am sure you will do well.

I asked in my previous reply what you had to drink yourself those first 7 days.
Wishing you well and inspired by learning how much weight you have lost already.
Thanks for taking the time to help me.
I have had no diet sheets from my surgeon they give it you afterwards so this is really helpful to me.
Be happy to swap recipes in the future.
    Be well and Well Done!

Here's another good list in case: https://www.obesitycoverage.com/the-...ve-diet-guide/

Also, if you can order from Amazon there are some bariatric soups that are pretty good. I think I've seen Knorr soup packages in Turkey. At least in Istanbul.

Make your broth with lots of flavors and then strain the solids and freeze them for when you move to another stage. How about Jello s/f or ice pops, are they available. Since I've never been out of the country, I'm not sure about the food products but I would think there would be something for the liquid stage. There are lots of recipes on the sites the other ladies shared and lots of information on the internet, so perhaps being creative will help not only with the foods but with some stimulation while you're going through the process.
    Continued success!

    Hi Dutch Sleeve,

Yes I have asked others to bring things back from UK for me.
Just was told not to use stock cubes or packet soups.
So interested that others have said use soups for the first 2 weeks is allowed.

Thanks so much for the idea of stock cubes I have got some today. After all its clear liquid and you have been through this yourself so I am going to use them.
Wow ! I have seen your weight loss progress thats amazing!

    Enjoy Morocco.

I drank regular broths with no issues. I don't think the salt content is going to be that big of an issue unless you have high BP. But I did not have to be on clear liquids but full liquids, rather. Originally your main focus is not getting dehydrated.

Yes as long as it liquid enough to drink through a straw they say. So really you can mix broth/stock with anything really - that way you can make soups you like.

I like many on here are on 2 weeks liquids (only had to do clear liquids while in hospital) then 2 weeks pureed (in that phase now) then 2 weeks soft food, then whole foods after 6 weeks

Thanks for your well wishes Pudsley, same to you xx

    Hi Aussie Girl,

    Thank You so much !
I was due to have surgery January 9 2018. But they found calcium in my blood which led to having Nodules from my thyroid removed surgery rather than my sleeve surgery. So I was with others who were having their sleeve done and they were all drinking fruit juice.
Then they said they would have yogurt drinks after 14 days.
I really could not find out anymore than that and they wanted me to recover from that surgery without worrying about the sleeve.

So I felt so lost with all of it.

I have recovered quickly from the thyroid nodule removal and gained another 4kg ! I did nothing different in my eating.
I just see it as making me more determined to change my life more than ever so Thanks so much for your support.
I now feel clear in my mind about the first 2 weeks, I feel after that puree is experimental and I am comfortable with that.

Watching your progress and clapping for you in your success.
    Be Well Lovely Girl.
    xx

I also had a set back - bloods clots that got my first surgery date getting cancelled in Oct, and yes I then put on 6 kgs before I started preparing for pre-op diet...

Things happen for a reason - for me I realised I hadn't really prepared mentally, hadn't done enough research and realised I had not prepared at all for the 6 weeks post-op diet. Second time arounds I came across this site and the rest is history

    Hi
So sorry to hear about the blood clots, must have been a worrying time.

You have really done so well so far!
How was work for you this week ? I am sure its challenging trying to adjust and be at work, but you sound organised and that is going to be key to staying well. Your positivity is inspiring and I felt humbled with your attitude to needing more time, I think I also needed more time.
There is no preparation of classes or information that I have been given here apart from constant whatsapp messages from my team.
Which has not been about nutrition or the other side of the operation.
But I feel reading books and doing my own research is the way forward for me.
I am nervous of not being organised or planning ahead enough for the unknown food wise I mean, but will cross that bridge when it comes.

If you have a moment could you let me know what you did in your first week. Did you rest and feel tired as you brought in your new routine.
Because I am self employed I work from home - I will need to have my energy for my work, I am aware I may have fatigue.
But I am planning to return to work a week after my operation. ( I consult on the telephone to people who are looking for 100% of my attention)
I would like to know if you experienced any tiredness.
    Bye for now.
