Default I think I am broken

As the title say ... I think I broken

My dietician told me to increase my calories so that I am at 1200 in the next 4-6 weeks, we’ll i have increased to between 800-1000 and I have gained 5 pounds in 3 days. I am eating a lot more soft food and instead of low cal pudding she said to get the normal stuff and peanut butter was a good way to increase my calories. Maybe I am miscounting .... I don’t know but I am doing something wrong.

I have found that there are wildly varying ideas on the calorie count in the first few months. I was told to stay at 5-600 calories in the first 2 months. But I completely stalled and then went on vacation where I couldn't be so careful (pretty sure my calorie count was higher)and lost 8lbs in those 2 weeks. The nurse in my practice told me to move up to 800 calories in my 3rd month then the nutritionist said, no, since I was exercising and burning 2-300cal/day, I should be eating around 1,000. I'm trying to increase without making bad choices. (But this just demonstrates how confusing it all is.)

What I have learned from veterans on this forum (see Ann2, tinman, sraeber & others) is that you have to make protein consumption 60g+/day and water (at least 64oz/day) priorities and then you have to figure out what works for your body. I'm still experimenting myself, so I encourage you to read the advice from the veterans, but otherwise you'll find people who will tell you to eat more and others who will tell you to eat less. This is clearly not an exact science and depending on other factors (age, activity, etc.) each person seems to have a slightly different combination that works for them.

You're not broken but only you can truly figure out what works best. Personally, I don't go near peanut butter because of both the fat and sugar. If you need soft foods, you can puree chicken, fish or even chili. Here's a good reference tool: https://www.obesitycoverage.com/gast...e-manual/#Diet

Don't get discouraged. You'll figure it out.

My NUT/surgeon never had me count calories. Only protein and fluid. While increasing your calories it should be with good healthy proteins. (Think good lean meats.) Peanut butter should be in moderation. You could be eating more than you realize with peanut butter. The portion is small and has a lot of calories and fat. I only eat it occasionally. Too many better proteins out there. You could just be retaining fluids as well.

I am going to stay away from the peanut butter. I am eating chicken, fish, scallops, I have had some lean beef. I had a little sliced ham but all the lunch meat is so high in salt. What else do you eat for low fat and carbs but can boost calorie intake. I am getting 65 protein and 2l liquids. I do agree it’s doing adjustments to see what works for everyone’s body

You can try low fat cottage cheese & low or nonfat greek yogurt. I make egg white omelettes or scrambled eggs fairly often and add a little cheese. I'm also trying more lentil and bean dishes. I track all my food on My Fitness Pal because, like you, I want to keep track of the sodium.

These kind of dieticians can drive you mad.
    Ignore them.
Focus on your protein an fluid intake.
    That's it.
Once you've got that nailed, the rest will follow eventually.
Just do the best you can, you will be fine!
Don't push yourself, that will only work against you.
    Best of luck!

Everyone is so different on how they lose. I'm trying to find that balance at 8 months out. I've just stopped losing and gained 2 pounds. I did increase my calories to 1500 and started working out more. I think my body is just adjusting again...well that is the story I'm going with

As for the peanut butter... I found pbfit! It is powdered peanut butter with 85% less fat. 2 tablespoons has 50 calories. I put it in my chocolate protien shake this morning (I haven't had one in months) it was sooooo good!

Hugs! You are not broken! It has only been three days, I know it’s very hard to be patient, but you have to be. 3 pounds is nothing, it’s just water weight. I have found that you are better off eating a variety, especially if you’ve been doing low-carb for a while. You need to change things up! Hang in there and give it some time, good vibes and prayers coming your way!

I’m 10 months out and can only get in 700-800 calories a day. If I ate snacks I know I’d easily hit 1200 a day. But I can’t get there on what I eat regularly. I LOVE peanut butter and eat it daily BUT I eat PBfit (peanut butter powder). A huge difference in calories (70 vs. 200). I was having 2 tbs with a banana but that banana has carbs and sugar up the ying yang, so I now have it on celery. It’s filling. I eat a protein bar diced up with some almonds when I want something to eat.

I eat lean meat for dinner: chicken or turkey, and I do have a protein shake daily still. I hit 90+ g of protein a day. Sometimes an omelette and spinach and some cheddar cheese for dinner. 102 pounds gone, so it’s working.

Wow! I'm 8 months out and upped my caloric intake to 1500. I drink about 4.5 servings of soy milk everyday and that is 450 calories alone then added with my homemade chai tea adds an additional 210 calories. The rest of my cals are from chicken breast, veggies and sometimes peanuts.

    Hi jen,
That seems a lot of calories for very early on??! I mean, i think you need to up them at some stage but right now you need to concentrate on the fluids and proteins.
And MAAAATE, i say this in an aussie friendly way... ditch that peanut butter love, its not doing you any favours. Bin. Stat. :-)

I love this comment make me laugh and smile. I will ditch it. I am getting in 65g of protein, 2 litres of fluid, and I feel comfortable at 800 calories. Over the next few weeks I will maybe increase to 900, but I don’t think I need to be in a rush to get to 1200 calories . It’s not comfortable.

EDIT: Jen, after posting below, I see you're eating over 60 grams of protein a day and two liters of water daily. Great on the protein, but try to raise your water. Still, that's pretty good for early out.

You are 34 days post-op. And your NUT wants you to start eating 1200 calories a day. ?!?!?!?

I really do not understand how anyone so freshly post-op could eat 1,200 calories/day without resort to crap food. IMHO these early months are all about learning to eat more nutritiously, to eat protein first, to learn how to eat more slowly, to start focusing on exercise, and to simply get your head around all the changes you've made to your body and how to commit to a healthy lifestyle going forward. It's not just about how many calories you eat. Yes, calories count, but again IMHO all calories do not count the same. If you're paying close attention you will start noticing that. In fact, I think you're already seeing it happen.

Also, IMHO peanut butter is incredibly high-calorie crap food. Another problem with peanut butter is that it's very difficult to measure accurately. It is not a food that you can eyeball correctly at all. If you haven't done this already, get an actual tablespoon measuring tool and fill it to LEVEL (not the least bit HEAPING) measure. That's how much (how little, actually) a tablespoon of peanut butter is.

And "pudding" of any kind -- low-cal or full-cal -- is completely worthless. There is absolutely nothing of value in it that your body needs. Pudding? Pudding?!?!?!

FYI, here's how much I ate post-op. It's EXACTLY what my NUT told me to do:

    Month 1 I averaged 400 cals/day.
    Months 2-4 I averaged 800 cals/day.
    Months 5-6 I averaged 1,000 cals/day.
    Months 7-8 I averaged 1,200 cals/day.

In Month 9 and beyond I slowly ratcheted up my calories until I found my maintenance calorie budget. That has changed over the years and is now at 1,850, but is a story for another day.

How many grams of protein are you eating daily right now? If should be between 60-70 grams. And unless you have a kidney disease or issue it should go up over the next few months.

Here's how much protein I ate post-op. Again, it's EXACTLY what my NUT told me to do:

    Month 1 I averaged 60 grams/day (after 5 days post-op)
    Months 2-4 I averaged 75-80 grams/day
Thereafter (and still) I have averaged 100 grams/day

Are you drinking all your water? Every day? Is it all water? You should be doing this.

Below is a list of things you do need to be eating. FYI, the following is a very common list of post-WLS foods offered by the majority of surgeons and their NUTS. In other words, it's standard post-VSG advice. Not "lots of peanut butter and pudding." Start with the first group and add more from the other groups as you can tolerate them:

Protein (fish, fowl, meat, cheese, milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.)
Plant protein (legumes -- beans, peas)
More fibrous veggies (tomatoes, squashes, carrots, green beans -- and over the coming year all the veggies you can tolerate)
Fruits (berries, melons, citrus fruits, apples -- eventually all of them; focus on the more fibrous fruits vs. bananas, which are pretty starchy)
Whole grains (quinoa, brown rice, red rice, barley, whole wheat/whole grain breads)

IMHO you should focus on these foods while you're losing all your excess weight. When it's time to slow the weight loss train start adding in a few treat foods that don't trigger you to overeat them. Lay off of alcohol until at least 6 months post-op. Again, this is standard post-WLS advice.

The above is how I ate, and for me it worked perfectly. I didn't lose crazy-fast (see my weight loss monthly records in my sig bloc below), but I lost 100% of my excess weight, and 3.5 years later I'm still at goal.

Finally, throughout all this process something you MUST do is observe what YOUR body is doing and take responsibility for changing things up if what you're doing isn't working for you. I'd say a 5-pound gain in 3 days is something that is not working for you.

    Very best wishes to you.
