    Default Exercise

I知 having an endoscopic sleeve gastrectomy done this week Thursday (1/11), and I知 wondering how soon I値l be able to start exercising. I知 sure I値l be able to walk in a treadmill within the week, but what about weight training?

I知 hoping to start running (though in the past, I only ran when chased &#128514. I知 excited to finally get to a weight which makes it more comfortable to start! I plan to use the Couch to 5k program when the time is right.

    Any advice is helpful!

Sweetpea, because youre having the endoscopic one i think you can do everything heaps quicker for sure. Ask the doc. Also couch to 5 k MAAAATEEEE, go for it, its how I learnt to run and i ended up doing 30km races. When I started i couldn't run 20 yards. Just follow the programme and as if by magic! Then do 8k runner, 10k runner etc. Go on! You can do it. I shall expect a report back :-)

My doc cleared me for anything at 2 weeks. But I had no medical issues, was a frequent walker (fat!), and had less than 100 to lose, so I'm sure that's a question for your surgeon as we are all different. I have heard up to 6 weeks. But I think everyone is told to walk a little as soon as they can, even if it's just in the hospital hallway. It helps to get rid of the gas they pump into you during surgery.

I know I started "real" walks week 2, and did have a few dizzy spells. So listen to your body. Exercise gets easier as you recover from surgery and start getting in more food.

I really got into running until I sort of messed up my knees. I loved it so much! Sucks to get old. Now I've quit running so I can still continue with all the other activities I enjoy Iike hiking and skiing.

Then when I was really into excercise, say 9 months, I started having weird spells where, while hiking, I would break out into a cold sweat and feel like I was trying to walk through water. My nutritionist said to be sure to have a protein/carb snack before working out. Once I started that it didn't happen again.

So excited about your surgery! You will be amazed!

I was told walk as much as you can after surgery. No weights, running, jogging, swimming etc...for 6 weeks. So that's what I followed.

Since your procedure is endoscopic I think your guidelines will be very different than those of us who are dealing with several incisions. Even with that, I was cleared for all activity at 4 weeks, including weights. Your surgeon should give you guidelines.

    Beginning weight: 265
    Weight at surgery: 255
    M1: 240 (-15)
    M2: 232(-8)
    M3: 227 (-5)
    M4: 221 (-6)
    M5: 215 (-6)
    M6: 210 (-5)

Agree with the above info. Walking is encouraged immediately after surgery! No weight lifting or other heavy activities for at least 4 - 6 weeks. I was cleared to do all activities at 4 weeks.

Running was never my thing. I started walking immediately after surgery, and 2 months post op I decided to try running a bit. I was amazed at how good I felt! I now run pretty much everyday and average about 5 miles every time I go!

You'll be running a 5K in no time!!!!!

    Good luck!

My doctor said to listen to my body. As for C25K...BEST PROGRAM EVER!!! That is totally how I became a runner (again).

I started walking immediately and was just cleared for weights at 4 weeks which I'm starting that today. Doc said to start light and listen to my body. So far I've felt amazing and have had zero complications. Best decision I have EVER made. Best of luck!!
