Heartburn

4 days post op and having heartburn. Any suggestions? Just drinking diluted juice and water during the phase one diet. Is this common, does it get better?

Your doctor should have given you a prescription heartburn medication as well as a gas pill.

Lay off the fruit juice. The sugar just encourages stomach acid.

Yes, get on an Rx antacid ASAP. Probably a proton pump inhibitor. Call your surgeon.

And ... gotta ask ... why aren't you drinking protein shakes at this point?

Maybe like my surgeon, we started protein drinks on day 8. First 7 only clear liquids.

You should have been told to take a PPI twice a day. it is over the counter. Until you can swallow pills get nexium or prevacid. Empty capsule full of tiny pearls in applesauce and swallow without breaking pearls. take twice a day for at least 4-6mos then as needed. I also carry tums in my purse. The ppi will not only help heartburn but stomach inflammation that mimics hunger pains and growling.

Sorry, no prescription given. Will contact him tomorrow. On just water and juice 50/50 until day
7 then switch to protein drinks. Thanks for advice.

I was wondering if it was the juice. These surgeons al have different plans don't they! I was on water and protein shakes and what they call full liquids after the op. That was broth and soup. I hope you get it sorted soon, heartburn is gahhhhhh! :-)

Post op appt today, Dr prescribed Reglan and Protonix. Full liquids here I come, maybe this lightheaded feeling and horrible heartburn will go away. Thanks for all the advice!

Get an antacid. The heartburn can actually mimic hunger pangs as well. Some people need them for longer than others. I only needed mine the first few months.
