Default Cashews/Nuts as a food choice

Hi All! What is your opinion on nuts for snacks? I have difficult time limiting myself on them, and today I had 40 of them in total approximately which was 320 calories and 26 grams of fat; along with 10 grams of protein. I like the protein count but am not fond of the fat content and calories. What is all your opinions on eating nuts (or in my case cashews) - and am I sabotaging myself by starting to get into the habit of eating them again, since they are high calories? Should I give them up or continue to have them. I am 3 months out, and want to get as much benefit from my early weight losing as possible; so far I've lost 57 lbs, but want to lose more! My goal is to lose approximately 100 lbs and don't want this to stop me.. Any opinions are greatly welcome!!

    Thanks in Advance
    Happy New Year!!

To me, it's seems like an expensive food (fat and calorie-wise), but I am not a surgeon or a dietician, nor do I know "the whole picture". I wonder if it might be helpful to review your diet and weight loss with a professional and get their thoughts and suggestions.

At any rate, 57# in 3 months sounds fantastic to me. Congrats!

Cashews are my all time favorite nut, but they are higher in calorie and fat content than peanuts. They are softer though. If you are able to eat nuts, and want to include them for the protein content, peanuts may be the better option considering calorie and fat content. Almonds would be best but they are so hard!!!!! You can always compare the labels and decide that way

I opt for almonds. Not sure how they stack up against cashews. As long as you don't OD on them, they aren't really going to hurt you. Everything/anything in moderation is the key!

Nuts are a trigger food for me. I can eat them mindlessly and wind up with more calories from them than I "need" to spend on them.

I don't think they're a "bad" food -- and have, in fact, changed my mind about foods' "goodness" and "evil" over the last 3+ years. However, YOU must be the best judge of which foods support your goals and which don't.

And just because they're OK for someone else doesn't mean they're right for you. For now. Or ever.

A huge part of this journey is figuring out what translates to self-care for YOU. And then having the balls to care for YOURSELF.

Hi All! Thanks for all your responses! They truly do help! I have given them away. I was self-pay and I didn't go to this extreme to get into bad habits and for me, the nuts much like for Anne are difficult for me to control. I can eat so many of them, and they truly are as another poster mentioned "too expensive" (calorie wise) for me to get into the habit. So I have given them away. I will stick to cheese for snacks. Much better option I think. Thanks for all your input!!

I eat nuts but have learned to limit my portions. I used to eat handfuls all day and couldn't figure out why I wasn't losing weight. Now I track and got back to goal. So nuts are good for you, but in controlled amounts. I wouldn't give them away.

I eat nuts but also limit them because it is very easy for me to eat them mindlessly as well. I do not really have any off limits foods now but lots of foods I limit such as sweets.

One way that has helped me in the past is to get the almonds in the little pre-packaged portions. I can't remember the brand that does it (green packaging), but they portion out almonds - and they have chocolate dusted ones even

Every couple of weeks I portion my nuts in little ziplock bags.
I eat 25 grams (about 1 oz?) each night.
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

True - you can do that with any foods really! Of course, now there are so many "100 calorie" pouches out there for treats - some of which a lot of us couldn't tolerate, but it is an excellent idea to portion out - for ease as much as anything else!

I just have no self-control when it comes to nuts/cashews so I'm giving them up. I will grab a few if I'm at a party or if there are some in a granola bar but straight nuts for me is just too expensive since I have little self control. The little calorie packs wouldn't stand a chance against me! :-) Thanks for all your responses!!
