Default 3 days post-op and have some questions

    Hi,
So I'm 3 days out and I'm experiencing what I think is dumping. It seems that everything that goes in, is coming straight back out. I have not been too good with water but have been getting in 3 shakes a day and my necessary vitamins. I'm drinking the premiere shakes with 30 grams of protein but if it's just coming back out, then I'm not going to benefit from it. Is this the normal thing to happen in the beginning? Also, I'm experiencing some tightening in my chest. I'm not coughing or anything but it just feels hard to take a deep breath. I also had a hiatal hernia repair so not sure if that is having any bearing on this. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Shari

    Hi Shari,

I am now just over 2 months post sleeve. What you are experiencing is what happened to me. The Dr explained to me that everything is very swollen inside. I had the hernia repair as well. Had no idea going in that I had a hernia. Your body has been through a trauma. After I got home from the hospital I couldn’t keep anything down. I gagged with everything I put in my mouth. I called the nurses because I was worried and they told me it was normal and to do the best I can. They assured me it would slowly get better and it did. By day 4 I began to feel less nauseous and it slowly improved from there. I focused on tiny sips of water. The first few days I would suck a cool moist washcloth to get moisture in my mouth. I had shoulder pain which was the gas. By day 4 or 5 it was gone. I think if you just hang in there a little longer you’ll feel better. Get some moisture in your mouth. Take water extremely slow. I hope this helps.

It does help. Thank you. It seems, from all I've read, that the experience is different pretty much for all of us. Overall same symptoms but some have them and some don't and they can manifest in different ways. Thanks again for your reply - a little encouragement goes a LONG way

I'm 4 days post-op. I have also had a hiatal hernia repair, but I am not experiencing tightening in my chest. That's not to say that's not the reason, just my experience. On the 2nd day I was nauseous. I couldn't wet my tongue with water without feeling like throwing up. I requested anti-nausea meds to keep that feeling away - especially before trying to have some broth so I could eat. It did help. The day after that I didn't need the anti-nausea meds anymore, and today I'm able to eat more without pain.

    Hang in there...

Doing better today. I'm able to drink more than 2oz at a time now. So far today I've got 70 gms and 435 calories. I'll be working on the 2nd half of the water now.

I think slow and easy wins the race. I haven't been stressing what's going in. I just make sure that I always have something there to sip on whether it be my shakes or water. I'm not looking at the clock. I know I'm not getting everything in that they told me to but I think this will get better as we heal.

You may also try a different brand of shakes and see if that helps. After surgery I developed lactose intolerance which gave me diarrhea.

Some people do have dumping. I was the opposite...sealed tight. I had very bad issues with constipation. The tightening in the chest could be gas. Are you walking much? Just remember to keep sipping and walking. I hope you feel better. The good news is that you are going through the worst now. It will continue to get a little easier each day.
