    Default Question about caffeine consumption

Hi all... this is my first post! I'm still in "deep research" zone and haven't yet decided if this is right for me or not. But, I was wondering if you could tell me how limited caffeine is pre-op, post-op, and long term?

I think I'm way more concerned about giving up caffeine than food. Actually, I'd be fine with just a little green tea or something when we need clear liquids but I get migraines when I don't have caffeine and am wondering if I need to just completely wean myself off leading up to the procedure?

    Thank you all so much!

I'm about 1 1/2 yrs post op. I drink anywhere from 3-6 10-oz coffees/day. (I didn't drink that much right after surgery, though....)

Definitely detox from all caffeine BEFORE surgery, or you'll be miserable afterwards.

I was worried, too. Cut back from about 5 cups a day to just decaf before surgery. Kept cutting back each day and then mixing decaf with regular. Finally got down to only decaf for my pre-op diet and kept it up for the month following surgery. Now I'm back to 1 cup/day. I mix it with my protein shake so it doesn't cause too much stomach acid. If I can do it, you can, too. My husband said he knew I was really serious about the surgery when he saw me drinking decaf.

I never cut the caffeine out...I drank two 20-ounce cups of McDonald's large coffee the night before I was sleeved.

These days I'm nearly 3 years out and drink anywhere from 3 to 6 cups of coffee with cream each day. The person who attempts to pry the coffee from my cold fingers will have a rude awakening.

All surgeons have different requirements. That being said, my surgeon/nutritionist never had me give up caffeine. I never have given it up during this whole process. I still drink my daily coffee with no issues.

I didn't have to give up coffee either, my surgeon didn't have a problem with it. I never gave it up but i went right off it after surgery and now only drink rosehip and hibiscus tea. I used to love coffee!

Pre-op (3 years, 5 months ago), I drank about 2 cups of coffee a day.

I did cut WAY back pre-op to about 0.5 cups a day. Then for 10 days post-op I was off coffee completely (my surgeon deemed that immediately post-op coffee is too hard on the poor shredded, traumatized sleeve). Boy, was I thrilled when he gave me permission 10 days later after surgery for one cup of coffee. That's when I started drinking homemade skinny lattes. For the first year post-op I had 2 cups of homemade skinny lattes/day, which is only 1 cup of coffee.

These days, I drink 1.5 cups coffee a day. That translates to 3 skinny lattes each day. But, hey, there's protein in skim milk, so ...

    In other words, no biggie.

P.S. What I don't do is drink high-calorie, sugar-laden Starbucks kinds of coffees. Those are grossly high in calories and sugar. Never was into those.

MIne was never restricted. My dr suggested cutting it back or out before surgery just so you don't get any withdrawl. I switched to decaf. I can tell you now that I have 2-3 cups of coffee a day (16 ounces each)

If you do find yourself in a Starbucks: get a blended Americano with cream/half&half/whatever, and some sugar free cinnamon dulce syrup....(some Starbucks even have fat free whipped cream), if you're hankering for something similar to a frappuchino, but without all the sugar

No way can I give up caffeine. Well, maybe if I tried, but I don't want to. My surgeon never said I had to.

I like my coffee with Premier Protein vanilla shake as my creamer. Tastes like something from a fancy coffee place!

Thanks for all the helpful info! I wonder why some surgeons recommend limiting caffeine while others don't. What risk does caffeine pose? Or is it the acid?

My nutritionist said there are two issues: 1. Too much acid 2. It's easy to get dehydrated after surgery and coffee can be dehydrating. Someone in this forum was having terrible dehydration problems in the first month after surgery and discovered that drinking coffee (and counting it toward the 64oz of liquids) was the culprit.

For 50+ years I drank straight black strong coffee. Now I do combine it with my protein drink in the morning because I find it seems easier on my stomach.

However, the bottom line on most things is that every surgeon has a different protocol and what one considers forbidden is no big deal to another. It can make you crazy!

Some say the caffeine is a natural diuretic. I say....so what? In tinman's world, you get to drink what ever your want, as long as you don't count it toward your 64 ounces of WATER that is a requirement, not elective, for good health and steady weight loss.

Gatorade, tea, cocktails, juice, margaritas, PROTEIN DRINKS, milk, etc do not count toward the 64...at least not in my world. No substitute for water. Now, I will say this. If you do become dehydrated, and you will at some point, you can drink a G2 Gatorade to replace the electrolytes. Propel water is also an excellent source of electrolytes.

Electrolytes are a group of essential nutrients and vitamins such as magnesium, Potassium, calcium and sodium are the main ingredients in this group. If you become dehydrated, your body will recognize the lack of one or more of the vitamins and throw your silly butt into a stall quicker than you used to gulp 2 big macs and 20 chicken nuggets. I've always maintained that chronic dehydration is the number one undiagnosed cause of stalls that we have.

So, to answer your question. If your sleeve can tolerate the acid, then there is absolutely no harm what so ever in drinking coffee. I drink 2-3 cups every morning, but, I refrain from taking any caffeine in after that. I also drink no less than 100 oz of water everyday and at least a gallon during the summer. I live in a tropical climate and sweat more than a 350 lb McDonalds employee manning the fry bin.

I would mirror what Ann says about the Starbucks shizz. Too much stuff in there to do any good. However, if you can drink a triple mocha chickachina and not gain or stop losing, then by golly....get after it.

As with all things sleeved, you gotta try it before you buy it. You may be one of the fortunate ones that can tolerate carbonation. I am not so fortunate. You have to try everything and then make a decision. After you have been sleeved three months, you are good to go for anything consumable on God's green earth. Some of it will kick your ass, and some of it won't. You'll figure it out over time.
