    Default Ghosts of Christmas Past

I went to my first Christmas party of the season last night (first of several to come). It was one of those we attend every year so I knew the food would be fabulous and we'd see many good friends. I recall last year lurking around the hors d'oeuvres table and consuming a couple thousand calories or more before heading to the buffet where I piled up my plate and then capped it off with a couple of desserts. And then there was the wine and egg nog... When I think back on it, it's amazing I had time to talk to anyone since I was so busy eating.

This year I had three small meatballs. Took me an hour to eat them so I had plenty of time to talk to friends and really enjoy their company. At the buffet I took a little salmon but had one bite and moved the rest around my plate. That was it. I didn't even want the desserts. Came home feeling comfortably full but not overstuffed as I did in the past.

Before surgery I worried that I'd miss the social aspect of eating. Now I realize I can be much more social when I'm not so fixated on food. I was having flashbacks all evening of how much I ate last year.

I'm grateful for the concept I've learned here of NSV's (non-scale victories). This felt like a huge victory for me. I'm not losing weight as quickly as some but for the first time in many years, I won't be gaining weight this holiday season. I don't feel deprived. I actually feel free to concentrate on the many things in life that are more important than food.

    This is encouraging to read!
I'm taking my 6 year old to a little girl's birthday party this afternoon, and I know that there will be enough pizza and soda to sink a battleship there (and nothing else.) The thought of pizza does nothing for me, now if it was brownies or something chocolatey I might be a bit mournful that I can't inhale a dozen, but when I really think about it. It's no fun stuffing your face in public, actually it's kind of humiliating. Now that I physically can't stuff my face anymore there's such a rollercoaster of emotions that get thrown up, but the overwhelming one I feel is relief, and that's what i need to focus on. Being a slave to the food is no fun, it's time food was our bitch, no the other way round.
    Heartening post Dale!

Such a great post Dale. Social occasions are so great without having to be bothered with food.
You are doing fine with the weight loss Dale, slower is often better for your skin and stuff and you know that in the end it will come off. I think we all often wish it was a bit quicker with lots of things in life. Slow and steady wins the race. You're doing so great x

I love this! Yes, I was a bit humiliated thinking of what I must have looked like last year. I love feeling like I can look at food and then walk away.

I have always said that my sleeve has never stopped me from enjoying social situations. Even right out of the gate. I just spend so much less time stuffing my face. Congrats on your beautiful NSV!!! I am over 13 months out and still don't overeat. I am still active and still love my sleeved life.
