Unhappy Two days postop and so weak

I had my sleeve on Wednesday and went home Thursday. I woke up Friday extremely sore and in pain, running a fever, chills, and nausea. Called the Dr. and his concern was the fever and my cough. Could be pneumonia from the anethesia. I really don't want to scare anybody off from this procedure but I am just am not doing well. I started sipping on protein shake and hoping that will get my strength back. You can't heal if your weak. I'm probably having trouble bouncing back because at 58 I just don't bounce....lol I do feel slightly better today and the fever has gone down. How long before I start getting my strength back.....anybody know. Also, another strange things is I am extremely hungry. The food on TV looks so good. Does that mean this didn't work for me?

I'm 2+ weeks out and I'm so sorry to hear about your illness. Have you been using that breathing thing to keep your lungs clear? I used it in the hospital and for a week after. Others in this forum are medical types so can tell you why it's important but it is.

Be sure to stay hydrated. My doctor said in the first few days that's even more critical than protein. I found that warm liquids worked best for me at first so I used some Bariwise soups that had protein but were all liquid. Also warm ginger and mint teas were soothing. There are some protein powders that can be mixed into tea or any other liquid.

I had what I thought were hunger pangs, too, but I think it may be stomach acid. Once you start eating more solids (I'm still on pureed) you begin to feel full in a different way than the past.

I'm 64 and I felt pretty good at 1 week and was able to walk 3 miles/day. Felt a little fatigued late afternoon and even took a nap or two, but now I'm feeling better than before surgery. If you don't feel better soon, be sure to call your PCP. In MHO, surgeons are not typically very good at your health beyond your surgery. Don't hesitate to ask for medical care if you don't feel better each day.

Thank you so much for the advice. That's exactly what I'm going to do, keep pushing the fluids and protein. I am feeling better this afternoon. It is only day 4 and I might have been jumping the gun and expecting to be back to normal. But I swear, not only does that food look good on TV, I also think I can smell it. lol My daughter had the sleeve 1 1/2 years ago and she said she was never hungry right after the surgery like I am. Strange.

    Couple of thoughts ....

    1. Are you taking a Rx antacid -- like Protonix (a PPI) or Ranitidine (an H2 blocker)? If not, you should be! Call your doc and get a script.

    2. Your initial post reminded me of my Day 3 post-op "WTF?!" moment -- it lasted two hours. That's the point at which you appreciate the vast difference between the *theory* of permitting a surgeon to cut off 80% of your stomach and toss it in the dustbin and the stark, irreversible reality of that having actually happened.

Don't worry -- we all get used to the new reality. And it will be OK and become your new normal.

    3. Finally, 58 isn't old. I was 68 when I was sleeved. Best of all, as the movie dialogue went, "We have more insurance."

The first week is the absolute worst. You are sore, tired, nauseous, weak. But it will slowly get better every single day. Vitamins, fluids, and protein are your best friends. I took a lot of little naps that first week. But 1 week post op I was back to my desk job. I was tired by the end of the day but it wasn't unbearable. It just kept getting a little easier each day. I have no regrets. I knew week 1 was tough.

    Hi,
I'm more concerned bout the fever and chills post op, that's not normal. did you go and see a doctor and get examined for this? If not you should, for sure.
I hope you are feeling better now, it is tough the first couple of weeks. In terms of fatigue I feel ya!!! I actually feel like pregnancy fatigue!!! I think that will just get better and I'm embracing it and being very nice to myself, I'm nearly 4 weeks post op.
Do go see the doc if you haven't been checked out though.. the fever was not normal.

You will be exhausted for at least a week, you just had surgery. Have you ever heard of someone coming home from surgery feeling fantastic? I slept most of that whole first week. When I wasn't sleeping I was walking a little and sipping my protein drinks. Hopefully you've seen your doctor, because a fever is not normal. Good luck!

Please after just two days don't say something like maybe this won't work for me. Have a positive attitude! It works, I promise. The sleeve is a miracle in my book. Being a regular-sized person is priceless, and changes your life for the better in millions of ways. Get excited about your journey!

My chills and low fever is back this morning so I think I will go to the walkin clinic and get a chest xray just to make sure its not pneumonia. I think I am recouperating normally from the sleeve procedure, but fighting some lung infection at the same time. It cant hurt to find out for sure.

Oh yes! Definitely go to see a doctor for fever & chills. It sounds like something else is going on and that's too much for your body to cope with at the same time.
Sending you healing thoughts & prayers.

There's some bad stuff going around in our neighborhood -- both respiratory and intestinal (although not necessarily in the same package).

I hope you get the right medicine and feel better soon. Do NOT get dehydrated! Drink / sip / however you can get the liquids down.
