    Default Need advice please

    Hello everyone,
I am having my gastric sleeve on Monday. I am a little nervous and worried about being able to drink my vitamins and how to take my thyroid medication as well. Any advice would greatly be appreciated on how to prepare myself for surgery. What vitamins should I order I have samples for now. Does anyone regret surgery? Has anyone else had there thyroid removed and have had this surgery? I been wanting to do this for a long time to feel better and be a better me!!! I am just a little scared about surgery and how I will feel after and being able to do the pre op diet afterwards..

Congratulations on making this life saving decision. It’s normal to be nervous. I had my thyroid removed a few years before. The first week I was on clear liq. Diet I crushed my thyroid pill and mixed in apple juice.worked like a champ. Then when I went to full liquid I put crushed pill in applesauce. Had no problems with my levels until I lost a bunch of weight and I became over active and had to have dose lowered. I used chewable vitamins. That worked good for me. I didn’t use Bariatric kind either. I found womens one a day or the Kirkland Multi Vit. Really good, plus chewable Kirkland or vita fusion calcium and at the beginning I took Subligal nature’s bounty Vit b 12. I get my labs check every 3 mos and my blood work is great except my B12 went to high because my diet is providing enough.
I do not regret this surgery only regret was not doing this sooner!!!! Best thing I ever did, I’m the happiest and healthiest I’ve been in years!!! Down 135lbs. No more Diabetes, High B/P, Sleep Apnea. Off six meds. Improved my chronic pain tremendously!! I could barely climb a flight of stairs now I am mountain climb/hike, run, ride my road or mountain bike for miles. Done 50mile round trips. The pre and post op diets were not bad. I was ready to make changes and take my life back and you can do this too. You won’t regret it. Just prepare to make the changes. Follow your instructions on diet and find away to live an active lifestyle. It gets easier with time. Happy to help you if I can or anwser any questions. If you ever want to talk on the phone I’m happy in a p.m send my cell too. Your in for an amazing ride. 11367BBA-3E2C-4947-BB97-E2F54D242D36.jpeg

Hallo, I've not regretted it for a second and I am 12 days out. I am soooo happy. I've been able to just swallow all of my pills from the start with no problems. Normal to be nervous but I think we often do much better than we imagine. Sending hugs x

We were all nervous about surgery, but it's over in a flash. And don't worry about eating after, because you won't be hungry or feel like eating. I had chewable bariatric vitamins after surgery (ProCareHealth or Building Blocks online), I would talk to your doctor about how to get in your thyroid medication. Maybe it could be crushed? Or if it's a tiny pill you should be able to swallow it with just a sip.

You'll do great! It is so much fun watching the pounds just melt off.

I was nervous, too, but even less than a week following surgery I am relieved and feel that it was easier in every way than I expected. I've been able to swallow pills without problem and make my liquid and protein goals--although it really takes constant effort. The hospital nutritionist told me not to worry about vitamins for a few days post op. She said they add some to the IV in the hospital so I should just spend the first few days getting used to taking my other pills. They will probably give you a list of what you need and you can order almost any on Amazon.

Just stay super hydrated until your surgery. It seems to make anesthesia easier to tolerate. And get up and walk as soon as you can post-op. Helps get all the gas out.

I’m seeing people say they swallowed pills in the beginning. Please don’t do that unless your surgeon says it’s ok!!!! It can have potential problems and wasn’t allowed for the first month by my surgeon and many other people’s surgeons i know.

I was at Johns Hopkins Bariatric Center of Excellence and they told me it was fine to swallow pills with some water the day after surgery. I haven't had any problems but yes, check with your own doctor. As we can all attest, every surgeon/practice has their own way of doing things.

I take a lot of pills and that was a concern to me, some I can go without but others I can’t. My surgeon told me I be able to still take my pills like normal. Which is great I am only worried about my anti depression the most missing that is horrible.

My surgeon made me crush my BP meds and my pill was small. Tiny. It was icky but I tolerated it. Crush between 2 spoons and add a bit of water. Then be prepared to follow with some water. Sugar free gum helped me get the taste out of my mouth.
