    Default This is it!

    Today is the day!
No more tests, poking, Dr.appts., starving....it's finally here. I was nervous but I'm doing much better after talking to the doctor. He made the actual surgery part seem very simple for me. He said, you get in, you get an IV, people will come and introduce themselves and ask you the same questions over and over and then you go to surgery, I'll put a mask on your face and then I'll see you in recovery. It was the perfect explanation for me (I'm a bit overstudied).
I followed everyone's tips and have all my necessities (got the gas-x strips) and I'll be home tomorrow. It feels like time flew by. This board has been a life saver!
I am going home on full liquid diet. Besides protein shakes, what can I have? Also, has anyone tried unflavored protein powder and is there good and bad? Where do I purchase this? I need one without odor. Thanks!

    Gege

Good luck Gege!!! For full liquid, any cream soups you can tolerate - of course jello and broth - but full liquid would also allow for basically anything liquid at room temperature - seems like folks here have been doing well with hot teas and broth to start though. You can get just about any of the protein powders on Amazon if you just want to pick up something small at Walmart or GNC until you can order more. I have an unflavored protein powder called AMP which is whey isolate from GNC. I have mixed with different Crystal light packets, or if you want to add flavors, get the vanilla extract or some of the other extract flavors. I found those help quite a bit.

So you must be in recovery now. We're all thinking of you.

My new favorite liquid is Bariwise cream of tomato soup. 15g of protein and not sweet. Makes me wish I had a grilled cheese to go with it.... Bariwise has loads of products on Amazon. So very soon now, you'll be on to this phase.

Good luck Gege, lucky you going home on full liquids. I was on clear liquids for a week post-op, then full liquid second week plus starting protein shakes, then cream soups third week. I really loved popsicles, broth, jello, fruit juice in the beginning. A good unflavored protein shake I like and can be mixed with any juice. It’s called natural whey protein by True Athete. I got it at GNC but may have it at other stores. Hope everything goes well. Please let us know how you do

    Yay!!! Good luck!
I made flavored protein ice pops for something a little different. Ziplock makes ice pop tubes. I mixed unflavored Unjury protein powder with water flavored with Crush sugar free water flavor packets. It was cold, felt good in my tummy, and was a different way to get protein.

For me post op, I could not stand the sweetness of shakes and also cold liquids. So what got me through was warm tea, latte's made with nonfat milk, creamed soups made with nonfat milk.

    Hello everyone!
I made it to the other side! I am home now and doing well except for the stabbing pain sometimes when I try to drink anything. I have read that it's common but I'm hoping it's not going to continue forever. I'm so happy it's over. Now just to figure all this pill crushing out. That has to be one of the worst things. Yuck. Thanks for all of the support!

    Gege

Hooray! I got the Isopure unflavored but it did have the whey smell, to me. But I have a sensitive nose.
I found any kind of cream soup - tomato, broccoli & cheddar, split pea, etc., were very good. And plain almond milk, latte's with it, tea, bone broth & of course my protein powders.

    You will do awesomely!

So glade your surgery went well and your home. Everyday will get a little better and by Second week it’s usually a lot better. Make sure you walk frequently and stay hydrated. Both of those things will really help. Pill crushing is not fun. I used some applejuice or mango to mix crushed meds. Then i would chase with some water and popsicles. Thank you for the update. Take Care and remember one step at a time

Something else I tell my patients that they can use to bulk up soups, or really anything milk or creamy base is skim dry milk powder. You'll have to keep in mind that for each serving (4 tbsp) you will be adding 90 calories, but it will also add 9 more grams of protein. So there may be times it is useful if you are eating a low fat soup or trying to add more flavor and protein to a shake - as long as you are ok with those 90 calories, it's a good way to add the protein without having to actually eat or drink more.
    http://www.carnationmilk.ca/skim-milk-powder.aspx

**again I also want to say I do not specialize in bariatrics before anybody jumps on me for suggesting something that they don't agree with - just throwing general tips out there**
