    Default Retirement, Not.

So I retired from teaching when school ended. Went back to subbing when school started. Found out a good friend has breast cancer, so I'm taking over her class starting tomorrow until Christmas. Bye retirement! My only concern is my exercise, as I live hiking in my woods. But I do have ski trips planned for January and February. Bought a Copper season pass and have to get my money's worth - and my exercise worth!

Sorry about your friend. Hoping all goes well with her treatment. I know you thought you were retiring but just think how lucky those kiddos are to get to spend their days with someone as fabulous as you!! Just don't forget to get your me time in. You are totally worth it! Plus...I think it is pretty selfish to retire at 30...slacker!!

Big change! I hope it goes great. Do you think you'll be on your feet even more in the classroom than you are "in retirement"?

Truly sorry about your friend's breast cancer diagnosis. I hope her treatment goes well.

Prayers for your friends treatment(s) and recovery; I've done it twice, plus 2 other cancers and its a rough row. But what a gift of peace you are giving her by taking her classroom! I'm sure you'll work out the exercise, and retirement will be waiting when you come back!

I actually had a really nice first week teaching a self-contained class of only six 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Haven't heard yet how my friend is doing, but I should by next week.

Retirement connotes not tiring to work. I have heard other people saying that the more you retire the more you work further. Teaching is a noble profession. You are an instrument for the kids' quest for a quality education. Good to know you have managed your personal physical activities. Multi-tasking jobs so to say.

How has the retirement experience been for you, and do you have any advice for someone considering retirement?
