Default An anniversary that came and went

Sept 24 will always be one of the most important days in my life. Its the day I had my surgery and started a new life. My surgical nurse said "Happy birthday" to me when I woke up in recovery, and I fully understand what she meant. It was definitely the start of my new life. I have been fortunate to have lots of support and not struggle with health issues post op. Three years out and I still am active with my hospitals weight management program, even guest speaking occasionally at the pre op meetings. My hospital offers a lot of post op support and I continue to take advantage of this. I guess what I want to say is that my sleeve doesn't define me. My anniversary came and went without fanfare, without a post but with the daily habits that I continue to live by. I am no longer perceived as the person that lost a lot of weight. Many people don't know that person and most have forgotten who that person was. I will never forget because I lived behind that curtain for so many years. I love who I am now, even though I am still insecure with the thinner me. After being overweight almost my entire life, I find it difficult not to see a fat person. Not all the time, but enough that it bothers me. I would love to hear from others about this and how they are dealing with it.
I did submit to my insurance to have a tummy tuck and I was denied twice with the reason that it is cosmetic. Maybe to them it is, but to me I still see that fat person. I am paying to have an upper arm lift. It is the part of me that bothers me the most. I am self paying and can't wait to get rid of all the skin. All the weight training in the world will never get rid of the extra skin.
This post is really a celebration of who I am now, with my faults and insecurities. I live for those non surgical victories, for they are the most rewarding. Thanks for reading.

Thank you for sharing your story! I'm still newer only being 5 months out. Even though I've lost over 100 pounds I still see the fat me. I'm sure it will get better with time but I think it will never go away.

Congratulations on making it to your goal and below! What an achievement to be proud of. You've used your new tool well. I do think its strange that insurance denies the removal of extra skin. It can cause rashes, infections, etc.

From their stats, no one stays on one policy longer than a year anymore, and they cannot recoup their money by "reaping" the rewards of your better health. I think setting a goal to take care of what bothers you is a sound plan. Taking control of things always helps us grow. You look great, by the way

Congratulations Jan, you sound like such a great assett to that programme and im sure your talks help so many people. My facility has a support group for afterwards and I was wondering whether to go, its optional. Maybe i will, I'm thinking about it now. What would you recommend?

Great job Jan. At times I have similar thoughts about the new, slimmer me. Especially when it comes to chairs. I still look at a chair checking to see if it’s strong enough to support my weight. It doesn’t happen as often anymore but that thought is still in my mind. I’m glad you found a good support group at your hospital and are able to offer real life experiences to current and future patients.

As for the tummy tuck, some plastic surgeons know the right things to put in their report to the insurance company to get the surgery approved. Keep bugging them

Stacy, I would definitely recommend taking any support that is available. That is why you see people on this forum that are several years out.
I have had the same insurance for over 20 years and counting. They are usually wonderful but they see this as cosmetic. I submitted a lot of documentation from my surgeon, my plastic surgeon ( who is outstanding and Accredited in Plastics and reconstructive), and my primary care physician. I will admit that my want of a tummy tuck is more cosmetic than necessary, but they don't need to know that....lol.
    Thank you for the feedback.
