Default Calorie Intake 1-3 Mo. Post Op

    Heyo Sleevers! o/

I am 5 weeks post-op my VSG. It's definitely been a trial, but things are looking up now. I am curious what other recent sleevers consume in terms of calories. My surgeon and dietitian both concern themselves with the amount of protein I am getting in (my target is 60g daily). But I am wondering if anyone else counts their daily calories post-op and, if so, what their daily average is. Personally, I am between 350-550 per day.

    Thanks, everyone!

I never really counted calories. I always made sure to count my protein to make sure I got at least 60gms in everyday. I discovered if i didn't get all my protein in I wouldn't loose as much weight. Protein fills you up really fast so sometimes i use protein drinks to get all my protein. It also keeps you from eating things you shouldn't. Good Luck with your journey.

First off Panda... I love your Avatar!!!! I am a couple of months out and just posted last week my struggle to get in the protein and liquids. I am going to start tracking what I eat in MyFitnessPal so that I can move closer to my goal of 75g protein/day. This will help with calorie count too. Hope you are feeling good and starting to get used to your sleeve

Hi everyone... I havent really been counting, I try too but sometimes I forget. I log everything in ATKINS since ATKINS give you the NET carbs and not total carbs. I'm 8 weeks out and I take in anywhere from 600- 900 calories a day I think...i just try to eat every few hours so i eat enough calories. my nutritionist told me to eat 1000 calories per day.

I don't count calories. Honestly, I don't want to do that anymore. My dietitian told me just to make sure I was eating enough protein and getting enough fluids in. I have struggled big time with the fluids. My body composition actually showed I was a little low. She also told me if I took my vitamins and calcium, and had at least shake per day, the 5 -6 mini meals of mostly protein would be a great diet. I mainly eat Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, string cheese, tuna salad w/ lite mayo, chicken salad, ground beef w/ tiny amount of tomato sauce or fat free gravy, chili, cream soups, and cream of wheat with Fai!life milk. I try to eat only 1/2 County at each meal. So, not that many calories yet. I was eating Trisket crackers w/ hummus but dietitian had a fit! Said I was rushing things. I really miss crunchy & salty!

I have NEVER counted my calories post op. My main focus was and is always protein and fluids. I have done just fine without counting calories. I knew when I would slow or stall that I needed to eat more protein. End of story. Assuming more protein would also mean more calories. So I just listened to what my body was telling me. Funny how when stalls began that eating MORE not LESS was the answer.

Wow, thank you for all this input. I might lay off the tracking process once I know I can get all my protein in. Right now, I struggle so hard with it AND getting in all my fluids - I feel like my mouth is Grand Central Station!! I hear that things will get easier though, and maybe once it isn't such a difficult push to get all that stuff in a day, I will try to move away from tracking and see what happens.

Thank you to everyone who replied so far!

I did count calories. Hey! Somebody's got to do it, eh?

Month 1 (after the first couple of weeks) I was eating about 450 cals/day.

    Months 2-4 I averaged 800 cals.

    Months 5-6 I averaged 1000 cals.

    Months 7-8 I averaged 1200 cals.

Around 8.5 months I hit my first target and bumped up to what I thought was going to be my maintenance level -- 1700 cals. In the next 9 months I very slowly lost another 15 pounds.

Ever since I've weighed 135 pounds. And because I've continued to track my cals I know that my maintenance calorie budget is 1,725/day. On average. Some days I eat more, some less. But that's my happy spot.

Now, the bad news -- not everybody is the same. Some have to eat less than others to lose and to maintain. It depends on your age, gender, how heavy you started out, how much you lose and where you want to maintain, how much you exercise and what kind of exercise you do, and your luck of the metabolism draw.

Honestly, I have no frickin' idea how those of you who don't do any science of you own ever figure this stuff out. Y'all must be a helluva lot smarter than me.

5 weeks post Op too and still trying different foods to suit my new tastes!
I'm not counting calories, I'm just trying to get in a few teaspoons of protein 3xdaily and a couple of snacks of Greek yoghurt or a few sips of V8 vegetable juice. I don't think that's enough to amount to many calories lol.
However after reading some of the other threads on this amazing site I've discovered that this eating regime is not long term and will get better ( looking forward to that) so then I will be looking at controlling my calories intake.

I think I am eating too many yogurts each day (usually 4-5). I eat 1 12 oz can of cream type soup with broth and milk added to liquefy it more. I usually eat a few teaspoons of Jif PB each day as well. I drink anywhere from 3-5 cups of coffee daily.I am struggling to drink my required 64 oz. of water daily. I am guessing at this route I am doing more harm than good. HELP!

I would say you need a trip to your dietician ASAP
If your coffee is made with water that will add to your fluid intake.
I drink peach iced tea to try and get my fluids in lol.
My protein consists of fresh chicken, salmon, tuna and baked beans.
I've just started making a frittata too. The last few days my tummy has settled down a lot and I've started to explore different foods again and eat a little bit more than a couple of teaspoons
It's early days for you yet so keep reading and learning as much as you can.
Good Luck Nothing up my sleeve. X
