Unhappy How much can you eat?

I'm 2 weeks post op and it seems like my stomach is much larger than it should be. It was my understanding that my new stomach would be 4-6 ounces in volume. But I can easily handle 1-1.5 cups of pureed food per meal. This is more than double what I thought my new stomach would hold. I've gone through a few posts and it looks like many of you don't eat more than 1/3 of a cup total per meal. That seems unimaginable to me. I feel like I've been ripped off. How much did you eat when you were 2 weeks post-op? How much can you eat now?

I'm seriously tempted to drink a bunch of water real fast until I barf just to find out what my new stomach capacity is.

Don't make yourself throw up....at 2 weeks post op it will hurt like hell.
At 2 weeks post op if I opened a container of Greek yogurt I probably ate at the most 1/4 of it. Now at 2.5 years out, I can eat 1/2 comfortably, all of it if I sat for an hour.
Your still on pureed, liquid.....wait until you start on solid food. You will feel full fast. Are you on prilosec or spme antacid? After my sleeve I felt hungry and I was mad because of it. My stomach was growling....but it was the acid sending me wrong signals. Whatever you do, only eat what your supposed to, don't say to yourself "Well, that didn't fill me up, so I'll have a little more..." just stick with the program and you will see results. In a few months from now your going to look and feel so different

I feel like I can eat a lot also, but when you think about it you are still eating way less than before. I had stent placement because of leaks and I believe it stretched my stomach a little. Just stick to the program, eat healthy/low carb and you will lose the weight. Only eat meals, not weight an hour and eat more. Measure the amount of food and only eat that. Just remember, this is a tool, not a quick fix. Also, stalls are a natural part of the process and unavoidable. Don't panic when you have one, embrace it and remember it's your body getting ready to drop a few more pounds rapidly. I also believe that pureed food passes through your sleeve more quickly than solids, protein fills me up quickly. Good luck and best wishes!

You have to remember that every sleeve is different and every person is different (starting point, etc. ...) You have to trust the process and do what your surgeon instructs. Especially just 2 weeks out. I agree with others, you are eating much less than before I am sure. I did not measure what I ate and still don't. I just try to get in the protein and liquids the best that I can and take my supplements. I drank a lot of broth and babied my new tummy for a very long time. Remember, if you are good to your new tummy.... your tummy will be good to you. I promise the weight will start coming off. You won't believe the results. xoxo

Okay...I'll go against the general grain of the other responses.

A sleeved stomach can accommodate an almost unlimited amount of fluids because they don't remain in the stomach for more than a few minutes. Liquids quickly slide across the pyloric valve into the small intestine, so they exit the stomach rapidly.

A sleeved stomach can accommodate a whole lot of pureed food because purees are a thickened liquid consistency (pudding thick). They slide across the pyloric valve into the small intestine, so they don't generate fullness for many people.

A sleeved stomach can accommodate a whole lot of slider foods (a.k.a. crackers, pretzels, chips, popcorn) because these turn into a liquid slurry once we swallow. Slider foods so not challenge the sleeve, so you can eat a 16-ounce bag of chips and never feel full.

I assure you'll feel stuffed to the gills if you attempt to eat 4 ounces of a rigid protein such as chicken, steak, or pork chops. For many sleeved people, soft foods and purees won't cut it.

    Good luck to you.

That's exactly right! I should have mentioned that! When I was on pureed food and eating soup and puree I was always starving and could eat much more! I forgot it wasn't until I started eating PROTEIN did I see how fast we get full! I forgot that you don't feel the benefit of the sleeve until you start eating protein, then boy do you feel it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I too thought my sleeve was done wrong because I get 10 sugar free popsicles down or a whole can of soup no issues! but once I started on proteins, faggettaboutit!!!!!!!!!! LOL

First 6 weeks are so your nerves may not be working correctly - I couldn't really tell what I felt. Once the initial swelling went down, combined with eating the softfood, it was hard to tell if there was still "room". I am a firm believer that during the healing period you should be eating by the clock and measuring spoon/cup. It isn't how much you "Can"eat it is how much is suitable given that you have just had the majority of your stomach removed.

Best advice I EVER got was to "eat to absence of hunger, don't seek to feel full." That didn't really apply in the early weeks though because things weren't really healed and solid food (a later phase) provides much more satiety.

Of course, I am basing this on the advice I got from my surgeon's office nearly 6 years ago - so if in doubt always ask your nutritionalist/surgeon.

Is cheese a slider food, or should I feel full off of it? What about canned shredded chicken. These are foods I introduced this week and I feel almost no restriction from them.

It's funny because I said the same thing as you at the beginning! and I was PETRIFIED i would be the only one that the sleeve didnt work with! I could eat so much pureed and liquids and no problem plus I was ALWAYS hungry! All that changed once I started eating eggs, tuna etc. My first try at protein was an egg and after two bites I had to lay down LOL. Don't worry, once you get on normal food and proteins, you will feel the effects of the sleeve, trust me on this! You won't feel it so much now but you will, your still on pureed and liquids so just remember, you will definitely fill up fast when you go to SOLID proteins! I didn't believe it when ppl told me, but now I believe them omg do i believe them! hahaha

Cheese is lightweight and doesn't really challenge my sleeve.

You probably won't feel full after eating canned chicken, either (too soft). On the other hand, 4 ounces of a real chicken breast or thigh will leave you feeling as if you're bursting at the seams.

This is why, as our diets progress, bariatric surgeons and dietitians emphasize lean proteins first. It's too easy to overeat other types of food, even with a reduced sized stomach.

Cheese I can eat more of without getting full quickly and I never had canned chicken but once you have a real piece of heavy chicken, omg you will get full after two bites! Eggs too. I can now finally eat a full egg but when I started I could only get down one or two bites.

Aydensmomma, wow! You can still only eat half a container of Greek yogurt this far out? Is that one of those little single serve ones? I'm so jealous!! I miss my honeymoon! I can eat so much more now, and I really really have to watch what I eat. I never had to do that in the first 2.5 years.

RehabNurse, the whole liquid thing is so true except protein shakes for me. I don't know if they put concrete in the ones I drink or what, but those things keep me full for hours. I know it's protein, but still just a liquid. Weird.

I could eat more puréed than solids. I've seen a lot of people who have no issues with liquids either. I personally couldn't down them. That being said, give your body time to heal and process. If you can eat a lot of solids without hurting or getting sick then I'd contact my surgeon.

Thanks everyone. It turns out my main problem was drinking while eating, or drinking too soon after eating. I was under the impression that the reason to avoid this was that it would put to much into your stomach at once and stretch it. Turns out the real reason is that when you drink while eating it helps flush the food out of your stomach and you can eat more. Thus, I felt like my stomach was huge. This past week I have kept this rule, and now the amounts I can handle are consistent with what I expected, and more consistent with what the rest of you are reporting. I'm no longer freaking out that my surgeon screwed up.
