Hi I am 3 weeks out and I am eating puree food and I notice that I get hungry every 1-2 hours after I eat. How long after you eat the hunger pangs kick in. I try to keep myself on schedule but it is hard.so i eat more cottage cheese or yogurt .

congratulations on your weightloss. The hunger pains your experiencing maybe from inflammation which mimics hunger pains. Taking nexium or prilosec twice a day will help if it's that. Also you will experience hunger pains that come from head, which just takes time working through. Drinking a glass of water or non caloric drink before your meals can help fill you up. Hang in there it will get better.
I think you're either experiencing stomach acid or mental hunger. I don't think it's actual hunger 3 weeks out. As easy as 3-4 weeks I was told to eat 3 "meals" a day and one snack and do not graze. at 3-4 weeks out a meal might be a few spoonfuls of lentil soup or half of a scrambled egg.
I think a lot of people experience the acid. I know I did. I agree with the others above. I took over the counter Prilosec and tums. Also, once you start eating solid foods you will find you get full faster and stay full longer. I did take a bite of beef jerky or a small bite of low carb protein bar the first few months if I felt truly hungry between meals until I stabilized.
Stomach acid doesn't just give you heartburn -- it mimics the feeling of hunger. It's a signal to your body that you need to eat because the acid is down there waiting to start digesting your food.
And post-op, your poor, traumatized, swollen stomach could do with a LOT less stomach acid than it's producing while it's healing rapidly. That's the other reason why surgeons prescribe a fairly strong antacid (a PPI -- google it) for the first 4-6 months post-op.

Excellent description of why people feel hunger pains so soon after surgery. I don't think I actually felt hungry (real hunger) until about 3 - 4 months after surgery.
Head hunger is another animal altogether. Its the tough mental game. Your mind tries to convince you that you are hungry (when you're not) and it causes phantom / fake hunger pains.
I stick to my schedule, Breakfast, Lunch, snack, dinner, snack. It seems to work for me, but I'll admit there are days when I snack more than I should. I'm not gaining weight so it's all good!
Hope this helps.
I took a prescription for stomach acid for about 6 weeks after surgery. I don't take anything now, and have no acid issues currently.
Take an OTC pill for acid if necessary (Prilosec, Tagamet, etc). I would check with your Dr first of course.
You can buy those things over-the-counter.
I take Omeprazole 40 mg./day. (The brand names differ, but that's the actual drug name.)

Thank you for the stomach acid info. I thought I should be able to stop taking Prilosec but from what I read here it's still normal to have this issue. I still feel better with a couple TBSP of cottage cheese at 10am. I'm at work at 6am with a protein shake and I find if I skip my 10 oclock snack I'm ravenous (or at least it felt that way) by lunch time. Then I eat too fast and feel terrible. This info has helped me, I'm going to start taking Prilosec again. Thanks!!!
