Had my surgery last Tuesday as planned. The procedure ended up taking 4 hours and when my consultant came to see me he told me it had been very challenging and he almost gave up half way through as my liver was still large despite following my pre-op diet religiously. He said he decided to keep going and once he was able to move it out of the way the surgery went very well.
It was scary to wake up in recovery, hooked up to various machines but I was not in pain. Spent my first night in the high dependency unit which is standard practice and managed to sleep on and off. The following morning was better as I was helped out of bed, had my catheter removed and able to have a wash and brush my teeth and then moved to my room. Still no pain although admittedly given pain relief and a strong ant-acid. Spent another 2 nights in hospital and discharged on Friday.
All good so far - I'm on liquids progressing from clear fluids to adding skimmed milk and slimfast shakes yesterday. Feeling well, no pain and walking the dogs twice a day and absolutely NO hunger pangs.
The only sting in the tail is my weight ........ I have gained 5 pounds since the day of surgery!! How is that possible? The stomach they removed must have weighed several pounds and I've "eaten" nothing for 7 days.
Has anyone else had a similar experience or am I the first person ever to have weight loss surgery and gain weight???
