    Default Bone Broth

Hello All! I will be getting sleeved on August 21st, and just tying to plan as much as possible now to be prepared. For the first few weeks on liquid I have been trying to find "healthy" broth with high quality protein. I came accross osso good broth online and decided to order it. Have any of you tried it? What other brands of broth have been your favorite?

I have a $15 off coupon if anyone else is going to try osso good broth w w w. o s s o g o o d b o n e s .c o m /? ref =27560-l . Let me know where you get your "Go To" broths so that I can stock up! Also which flavors of broth do you like. I am also going to stock up on hot and sour soup, egg drop soup etc. Anything I can freeze now for later will help.

    Thanks,

    Cheri

I was sleeved 3 years ago and was on WLS message boards for nearly a year pre-op. I've seen a lot of conversation about "bone broth" during that time. And here's my take on it.

You're not going to starve to death in the first few weeks post-op, even if you did nothing but drink water. Remember that within two weeks post-op you'll be eating / drinking actual food. Yes, it'll be pureed, mashed, and only a little bit of food (2-4 ounces at a time). But IMHO you'd be just fine eating stuff from the regular grocery store.

That being said, anyone can and should do whatever meets their needs (within their surgeon's guidelines). But coming from someone who's been through this, please don't stress overmuch about all this. FYI, I just drank regular old beef broth and chicken broth when I was in the broth phase. One thing I did do (which was pretty delish) was to add a few teaspoons of Thai peanut sauce to the broth. Mmmm-mmmm. But that was just what I liked. Your tastes may go in a different direction -- like bone broth.

Welcome and very best wishes as you enter the Sleeved World.

Thank you so much for your advice! That is good to hear, because I was pretty worried about getting bored with broth and straight liquids.

I have read that bone broth is very good for you, has lots of protein, and also beneficial to the gut so I would like to start drinking it as well, for those reasons. I am pre-op also. I only tried one so far and couldn't get past the smell to drink it. I would be interested in the responses you get.

I never used it. I agree with all that Ann said. And another thing I would like to add is that post op your tastes may change and you may only like certain flavors. I couldn't tolerate sweet or cold liquids post op for a while. And I have heard of others who liked certain protein shakes pre op and then post op didn't like them anymore. I do not recommend stocking up on anything. My liquid phase was only 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of pureed/soft foods, and then food. It passes quickly. But your post op may be different as there are many different post op diets depending on your surgeon. Also, there is flavorless protein that you can add to stuff to give yourself extra protein.

I agree with prior posters. Your taste will change post op. My biggest suggestion is to buy the smallest packages of things to test if you like and can tolerate them. In my opinion the most important thing is to find a protein shake that you can drink and keep down.. that was the hardest thing for me and i kept buying the big tubs of them.. As a result I have like 6 huge tubs of protein shake mix and i can only stand drinking one brand, ( EAS protein shakes) .
I actually also could stomach the lean 25 vegan shakes from GNC. personally I had a problem with any shakes that foamed up when mixing them.
Don't stock up before surgery. buy small portions of things after surgery to test them.
Oh.. with the exception of sugar free Popsicles. STOCK UP ON THOSE! they are a lifesaver.

Sugar free popsicles, nice suggestion! Ya, protein shakes can be tricky. I recently switched to a vegan shake, and it's not nearly as good as the whey shake I had been eating previously. I'm kind of nervous to have my taste buds change. I remember taking the weight loss Qsymia, and that was one of the side effects. Well if I don't like the same food , I guess that will just aid in the weight loss. I'm hoping to have about 1 weeks worth of food to help me avoid the grocery shopping, which is already one of my least favorite chores, after I get home to recover. Ok so I have a little bit of bone broth, some bullion, I'll grab a package of sugar free popsicles. Anything else get you guys through those first couple weeks?

@christie13 Is the flavorless protein you are referring to a powder? This sounds interesting.

I'll let you know if I like the taste, and what I think once I give it a shot. I know All Roker was all about it after he had gastric bypass, and when looking at the nutrition facts I was impressed. But we all know that if it's gross, the nutrition facts won't matter because we won't eat it. I eat pretty clean, and most plant based fresh veggies pre diet. Although, I'm going back to animal based protein post diet, I'm still going to try and eat as clean as possible.

You will be stunned how little you will consume post-op. Especially the week or two after surgery. Just about all I did was SF Popsicles and broth of some kind. Usually, I just boiled a couple of chicken breasts for broth and that was good enough. My wife ate the chicken as a chicken salad so that did not go to waste.

Hey all, just thought that I would post a quick update. I am almost 2 weeks post op (Monday), and feeling pretty good. Still on liquids, but not disliking it too bad. I just find it is hard to get both my water and protein in during the day. The bone broth has been great. Since I hanvent had a ton of options to eat, having the chicken bone broth, that contains a decent amount of protein to sip on has really helped with energy levels. I don't think its AMAZING, but I do think its good.

The funny thing is, I used to say I could survive for months on the amount of fat on my body-little did I know I was right. Still have about a months worth of fat. I think my wife was so worried about having enough of what I needed. Anything more than SF Popsicles and PowerAde Zero then Almond Milk and protein powder was too much in the first two-three weeks.

Post-Op I took the advice from so many here and did not stock up on anything. My hubby and I got Pho a few times and I just drank the broth and it was heavenly. I tried a variety of soups and used a skimmer and only drank the broth and did not have the veggies or pasta (Campbell's). I loved my SF popsicles and still do. Just remember sip, sip, sip! It all comes together xo
