Default Is the sleeve successful for most people?

I've read some people's experiences about having very little success after being sleeved. I lose weight very slow in general, so do you think I will be slow to lose after the sleeve as well?

I had a very difficult time losing weight pre sleeve. I could work my ass off in the gym and diet and struggle to lose weight. If I ate very little and worked out 2 hours a day in the gym I could sloooowwwwwlllly lose weight. And the minute I wouldn't have the same amount of time to devote or couldn't maintain that small amount of caloric intake I would gain it back. The sleeve worked for me. I was very skeptical that it would work. I just knew I would be the person who it didn't work for. Boy was I wrong. I am so glad that I took the leap of faith and had the surgery.

Your stats are similar to my pre-op numbers: I am 5'1 and weighed 218 pounds on surgery day.

Generally, I was a slower loser. It took me 17+ months to lose 100 pounds. You can take a look at the signature block below my posting to glance at my monthly losses.

However, you mileage may vary. Good luck to you.

I think if you ignored your surgeon's advice about what, how much, and when to eat you could manage not to lose weight or to regain it all back. But most of the folks who post here have been very successful.

Thank you for your responses. Christie13 you sound a lot like me in your pre-op days. Story of my life! I feel like I'm always running to stand still :/. Rehab nurse- you have done awesome! If it took me as long as you, I would be happy . I just want it to work!

Hi👋🏻, I had my sleeve 2 months ago and like you have put 100% effort into losing weight only to loose the odd pound very slowly . For the last year I've been to the gym X5 a week 3 hours a day ! I lost 28lbs in the year. Since the sleeve two months ago I've lost 29lbs!!! I'm delighted. I'm back at the gym on cardio only until I'm cleared for weight trying in a month because of surgery( don't want to pop a hernia!) I feel so grateful for this opportunity . I'm 48 and live here in the U.K. You will be so thrilled too, hang in there you won't regret it. All the very best .

The thing to remember is the sleeve alone isn't going to cause you to lose weight. You still control what goes in it. I have to think that people that do not lost weight are not eating right and most likely eating slider foods.

Sure it is possible to not really lose weight after having WLS but from everyone I've talked to and from what I've read it's not typical. Having WLS is just another tool to use and in my opinion those people who are not successful in losing and keeping the weight off usually just didn't use their new tool properly. I can not speak to have quickly you will lose your weight but I would say you shouldn't compare yourself to other people everyone journey is unique to them best of luck to you on yours.

    pre-op weight- 298

    4 month out- 215
    5 month out- 203

Serious bit of advice here: Everyone who chooses WLS and is successful long-term has also chosen to completely change their lifestyle -- eating, drinking, exercise, nutritional education, and many other forms of self-care. Anyone who thinks WLS is the only action they must take to lose weight and keep it off permanently will be deeply disappointed at their results.

The people who are successful are the people dedicated to their new lifestyle. They follow the rules given by their surgeon and nutritionist. It becomes second nature. They have a huge desire to be healthy and fit. They exercise. They take their vitamins. I have been a regular sized person for 3 years and there's nothing like it. There is no way on earth I would want to go back to the old me, I was miserable.

The people who are not successful are the people who go back to their old way of eating. It would be really easy to gain back all your weight by eating junk all day long. So the choice is yours!

It is a lifestyle change, and if you don't eat healthy or follow the advice of your doctor, then yes, weight will creep back on. But after putting myself through the pre-op diet for 3 months, the surgery and all the testings that went with it, and the hard work to lose all this weight... the LAST thing I would want to do is sabotage myself. When we commit (when I committed) to the surgery, it was because my health was suffering and I was a miserable mess.

    Height: 5'8"
    Highest Weight: 270 BMI 40.3
Day of Surgery Weight: 223 / Pre-Op nutrition diet: LOST 47 pounds
1 Month Weight: 202 (-21 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 64 pounds
2 Month: Weight: 188 (-14 lbs.) TOTAL LOST: 78 pounds
    6 Month Weight: 169 (-2) BMI: 25.7 TOTAL LOST: 97 pounds

I, too, was worried that I might fail with my sleeve. Heck, I have been overweight my entire life and had failed long term with every other method of weight loss that I had tried, so of course that thought lingered in the back of my brain. But I have followed the guidelines, tracked my food intake and water, am much more active, and have lost 54 pounds since February 14th. Having said that, have I had a few slip ups? Yes I have. Do some foods still taste, oh, so good and tempt me? Absolutely!! But the interesting thing that I have noticed is that even when I slip up and nibble a little too much on the not so beneficial foods, it no longer sends me on a frenzied binge, and I am able to easily get right back on track. I don't experience those terrible obsessions and cravings with food anymore. Food doesn't drive me and control me like it did prior to surgery. I feel at peace with food for perhaps the first time in my life. I have about 20 additional pounds to lose and I am confident that I can do it. I have no regrets. Would do it again without a minute's hesitation.

Hi Ann2, your weight is similar to mine so far. Im 1 week and a day out from surgery and I am becoming very disappointed. I have 1/2 a shake a day, broth and and lot of water and have been between 193-195 for a week now. I am beginning to wonder if there is something wrong.
