    Default Admiration for Southerners!

OK, I'm visiting my daughter in Mississippi and walking is taking on a whole new meaning. OMG it's hot and humid here! I typically hardly sweat (live 11 hours north), and now I'm dripping, even my hair. Walked inside the house and my glasses fogged up.

Do you think exercising in this weather burns more calories?!? Let's hope.

And people wonder why folks who live in the Deep South are overweight?

It's because it's too freakin' hot to go outside and do anything physical unless absolutely necessary.

That has to be true. I can dress/layer for cold, but can't do anything about the heat. I'm of Norwegian ancestry, so I maybe I'm made for cold, snow and mountains.

Obesity in the Deep South is also due partly to Southern food: sweet tea, fried chicken, biscuits, gravy, cornbread, pork chops, country fried steak, peach cobbler, fried okra, fried catfish, hush puppies, grits, dumplings, barbecue and other tasty stuff.

But yes, back to the weather...the humidity in the South is oppressive. It promotes an indoor lifestyle of movement from the air-conditioned house to the air-conditioned car to the air-conditioned workplace back to the air-conditioned car & house.

we just got back from a week near Mt Hood, Oregon, and OH.MY.GOSH.!!! the weather was uh-MAZING!!!

I even walked in the woods about a mile and did just fine! (a little sore in the knee and back, but hey, I did it)

I can totally see why you like hiking, sraebaer!

Unfortunately, I believe we burn more calories when it's cold out, because we are also using calories to stay warm.

    OMG! Pam exercised!

    Very happy for you.

BTW, I saw this comment recently on another WLS board and loved it ....

Exercise is a celebration of what your body can do ... not a punishment for what you ate.

We did live in Mississippi years ago (have lived in 14 states) and I remember when I told my son's girlfriend I didn't know how to fry any kind of food, she looked at me horrified, and said, "Then what do y'all EAT?"

Hahahaha! Here is Southern Texas it is always hot as balls but you get used to it! When I first moved here from the Netherlands it definitely took some getting used to since it was always rainy and cold there. Now I can't imagine being anywhere else. Although marrying my HS sweetheart may have something to do with that.

Im in Houston. Like they say, "its not the heat. Its the humidity."

even when it was 90 degrees in Portland, it felt so much better than 90 feels here.

and Ann...i walked a mile TWO TIMES! Lol. I could have walked more, it was beautiful. But we had my 86 yr old MIL with us, too. And she also walked a mile! She used trekking poles and we got her some legal herbs for her back pain, and she did great!

Being born and raised in South Louisiana, I'm used to the summers. We don't exercise or mow lawns in the heat of the day. Anything done outside is done early morning or in the evening. A gym membership is helpful! I have to agree that the Southern/Louisiana diet has a big impact on obesity rates. It's hard to pass up a good poboy, gumbo, and jambalaya when they are regular staples around here. Thankfully, boiled seafood adheres to my eating plan!

I'm addicted to the voodoo rolls sold at some restaurants in New Orleans and Metairie. Too bad I don't know of any places here in Texas that sell them.
