Default What are the worst things about the sleeve?

Hello, My name is Anna. I have the lap band now and will be converting to the sleeve. I am wondering if anyone has any problems? For instance with the band if you forget and take to big a bite you feel like you are going to die and you have to immediately throw up. I would just like to know what I am getting into. The lap band was horrible for me. Just want to make sure I am making the right choice. Thank you!

Welcome Anna! I'm sorry I never had the band but I know with my sleeve you really feel it if you take to big a a bit or eat to fast. I have never thrown up though but that is me. Good luck!

I've never thrown up, but if I eat too much I suffer for a few minutes. I think you will love your sleeve, congrats on your decision and welcome. The best thing to do is measure your portions, even if it's on your plate. Set aside what you're going to eat and that's it. Good luck!

6 months and have not thrown up once. However, I do have to be conscious of the bite sizes and chewing well. Aside from that not issues for me! I love my sleeve. I contemplated lap band in the past and glad I did not go that route. Best of luck to you!

Three years post-op. Still haven't thrown up even once.

That said, some people do have trouble early on -- probably (?) because they don't chew well enough, eat slowly enough, take too-large bites, haven't yet learned to appreciate how small a very young sleeve (a few months post-op) really is. As your sleeve heals (it's terribly traumatized and swollen early on and, therefore, much smaller than it will eventually be) your capacity will very slowly increase. After 6-9-12 months post-op your capacity will be larger. Which is a good thing. But it will never be as large as your original tummy was -- especially if you eat what and how you're supposed to eat long-term. (Don't worry about that now, you'll learn all about eating protein first, not drinking with meals, etc.)

    Welcome!

In early months you have to eat slow and not overeat. I'm 9 months out (today!!) and I can eat more. I eat at a normal pace. I've learned to listen to my body. No throwing up. I did spit up foamy stuff in the early months if I ate too fast or too much. My biggest issue has been constipation. That is finally getting better. I love my sleeved life.

I'll be getting sleeved in October, and this information is so helpful! I've been practicing small bites and good chewing, as well as cleaning up my diet and exercising. Surgery day can't come soon enough!

Any advice you all can post about the best protein shakes, vitamins and bariatric nutrition resources (meals, snacks, books, other support) would also be very welcome. I'm sure there are scads of this info all over this site (I'm new -- can ya tell?), so feel free to kick me in the right direction.

    Thanks all!

I have never had the bad but I love the sleep. You learn to eat small amounts if you don't like feeling uncomfortable. If I eat too much or too fast I may experience dumping. I have never vomited. I have experienced dumping and you have to get a bathroom ASAP. I love my sleeve. I am down 90 pounds in 9 months. My Dr wanted me to loose 95 pounds in 12 months. I need to lose 5 more pounds but I want to lose 20 more. It has been GREAT! for me.

Good luck Anna! I am scheduled for my sleeve op at the end of October (I have to have my gall bladder out first in September). I'll be interested to follow your experiences

I am planning to get the revision as well. I have had a band for 10 years and 9 days. I had my Lap Band surgery in Mexico and it was a great experience, but it wasn't with Dr. Almanza. This time it will be. How was the experience? Hospital clean? Easy to communicate? Was pain managed well? Did you feel you could go back to a "desk" type job within a week? I am so tired of PBing and vomiting. I've been able to keep my weight off pretty good until this last 18 months. My goal weight is 190, but I stayed around 210 for years. I am now at 226 (I was around 290ish when I got the band in 2007). One last thing, my wife will not be coming with me this time due to parenting obligations, do they take good care of you and things will be OK if I'm there without help or support? Jimshoes

Hi Barb, I am only a couple months out but when I was first on the site I would use the search tool to find all kinds of stuff on the site. It was nice because there are some really good "older" posts that you would not normally see. I wish you tons of success!!!!

Hi Jim, I posted a really long blog post about my very positive experience with Dr. Almanza in Mexico. I am not sure how to post it on here for you to see but you can go to my profile and see my blog. I wish you success!!!
