Unhappy 8 week post op & frustrated

    Hello!

I went to my 8 week f/u on yesterday. I'm down 28lbs since surgery. I feel very frustrated. I walk 4-6 miles every day & I do dancercise 3 times per week. I don't see the weight loss; however; I do feel great physically. I've had some advantages, like diabetes going away & cpap machine going away. So it hasn't been a total loss, but I'd like to see the results of my hard work.

Uh ... I'm sorry, but why are you frustrated? You've lost 28 pounds in less than 2 months, right? And your diabetes is gone and you're off your cpap machine!

YOUR WEIGHT LOSS IS SO FREAKIN' WLS-SUCCESSFUL I'M THRILLED FOR YOU!

Check out my monthly weight losses below. 10 pounds in Month 1, 11 pounds in Month 2, 10 pounds in Month 3, and then single-digit monthly losses after that. And yet ... I lost all my excess weight and have maintained that for the last year and a half. That's what weight loss for WLS patients who started around your starting weight and successful maintenance looks like.

I honestly don't know why so many people think they're supposed to drop 40-50 pounds the first 2 months post-op. Where in the world do these freakin' unrealistic expectations come from?

You are doing great. Appreciate yourself. And please, please, please stop beating yourself up.

I understand your frustration - I too am working hard and am not seeing the results that I expected. I am only 17 days out since surgery.

GETTING RID OF DIABETES AND CPAP IS HUGE!!!! HUGE - don't discount it....

If you keep doing what you are doing, you are going to be a huge success. you are doing great!

Well, I had lost 27.5 pounds at 2 months out, so you're actually losing the weight at a faster rate than me.

You need to adjust your expectations to match reality. You will never be one of those fortunate souls who loses at a rapid-fire rate of 30+ pounds monthly since you weren't super-heavy to begin with. Generally, heavier folks lose faster.

When is the last time you lost 14+ pounds a month with plain old diet and exercise? I assume the answer is "Never!" 28 pounds in 2 months is 14 pounds monthly, which is excellent.

Take a look at my monthly losses in the signature block below my post...we had similar starting weights. Good luck to you, and drop the frustration when there's nothing to be frustrated about. The final result is more important than the rate of loss.

    Again, good luck to you!

You are doing amazing! 28 pounds lost is great, not to mention losing the cpap machine and diabetes. I was off my high BP meds and cholesterol pills IMMEDIATELY (before surgery) and didn't need to begin the diabetes meds I was due to start in December because I lost 42 lbs. on my 3 month pre op diet. I still cling to my cpap machine like grim death because I am addicted to the thing (and I don't need it any longer.)

You are being too hard on yourself and believe me... the weight will come off as the weeks and months go on. If you follow a nutritious road with the right proteins to eat and water to drink, take all your vitamins and supplements and continue to exercise (even just walking daily), you will see results. I do all the things you do and am down 92 pounds now (my surgery was March 24). You are doing great!

How have your measurements changed? I will bet with all your exercise, you are shedding inches while building muscle in replacement of FAT.

Even if that is true, you still have lost 28 pounds in two months. You are doing great and creating lifelong changes to your lifestyle that will impact your longevity. Be happy and stay focused, you are doing great.

Thank you. I'm not giving up. I'm so grateful to be rid of diabetes & my cpap machine. I just really feel like I should have lost more weight or at the very least, see some changes. I'm in this for the long haul & I know it's not some magical pill, but just a tool to aid. So many people lost so much more weight than I did & I became discouraged. I'm working really hard! I'd just like to see some results. How long was it before you saw changes in your body?

Here's who loses faster than you: Men. People who started out much, much, much heavier than you started out. People who have massive amounts of muscle tissue (young men who used to play football). Men. Oh, and men.

I think that is some pretty great numbers...especially considering that you were not that big to begin with. AND....you are only 44 lbs away from goal weight!! You got this! You just need to relax. Also, if you are working out that much you may be eating too little. A lot of people get over zealous and work out too hard and eat too little. This actually would stall my weight loss.

Have you ever lost 28 pounds in 8 weeks previously? That's a lot of weight! Sounds like you're doing great. If you are eating right you have nothing to worry about, the weight will come off.

I know it doesn't work for everyone, but it's my positive attitude through this whole thing that made a huge difference. I was happy the whole journey! Frustration won't get you anywhere. Good luck!

You are doing amazing. I see so many post-op WLS folks who end up comparing their progress against others and becoming frustrated and disappointed. This is a human thing, yes? But is it also one of our most self-defeating habits. We're trained from birth to be mindful of what others are doing and to copy those actions for the purposes of daily survival. We mimic from birth. However...

Please, please, please do not compare the personal progress/success of others against your own. This is a very personal journey unique to you and only you. The similarities cannot be helped (of course! We all had VSG) but our genetics determine so much of what occurs after. If you have not already begun to do so, I recommend staying away from the scale and moving more towards measuring yourself weekly (not daily). I have not moved on the scale for a week, but yesterday I was able to fit into a pair of pants that I could not the week before.

I think you're doing wonderful and please keep up the good work!
