    Unhappy UHC troubles

Hi I am scheduled to have gastric sleeve surgery on August 3, 2017, I just found out today that UHC is denying my surgery because of my 5 year history. I have a BMI of over 40.5 and I was recently diagnosed with diabetes after being pre diabetic for years. UHC denied my surgery because I did not have a BMI of over 40.5 for 5 years or a BMI over 35 with a comorbid condition for over 5 years. I am confused?

Hmm - I have UHC and they did not go back five years or ask about prior BMI. Perhaps a different plan? Mine is through my employer.

I couldn't get insurance to pay for my insurance. I went to Mexico and saved a lot of money and still had a great surgeon.
If you can't get them to pay for it, I would recommend using the doctors in Mexico. There are a lot of Mexico sleeve patients on this site.

OMG.. Dont' waste another minute of your life being miserable and overweight. If your insurance won't pay look into Mexico. Dr. Almanza is Amazing and the nurses and crew are top notch. Compare their total price to your co-pay and you will probably be within $1,000 of what you would have paid with insurance covering it. The even give you all your post op medicines. It's not worth having to wait 6 months to a year to get it done through insurance anyway.. make the decision , get the surgery and start living again NOW. I researched for 2 weeks made my decision and booked surgery for the next week. I'm now 16 days out post op and SO happy I did this.
    good Luck.

I ended up paying more with insurance than if I had just gone down to Mexico. Not to mention the amount of time I spent. The only plus side, in my opinion, of staying local and going through insurance would be the follow up care with my surgeon. Other than that, I could have saved time and money going to Mexico. Good luck with your decision.

Appeal the decision, it is your right and your duty to stick up for yourself. Call underwriting to get the exact reason for the denial.

After that rely on the doctor to work the system, it is in their best interest to get you approved.
