    Default Is this dumping syndrome?

Hi there! So I'm almost a year out from surgery and on a regular basis I feel painful cramps in my lower stomach followed by loose bowel movements/ diarrhoea. Once I've passed a watery stool, the cramping goes away and I'm ok - mind you this can sometimes take a few hours - I can't seem to find a trigger as to why this is happening, I thought maybe I have developed a lactose intolerance but I can eat a block of cheese with no problems. I don't have any other dumping syndrome symptoms that people mention, its literally just cramping then diarrhoea. And I hear people saying it's rare with sleeve patients, but I'm experiencing this almost weekly. I've had to rush out of shopping centres leaving the trolley as it just randomly happens. It's getting hard to go out because now I'm so paranoid that it will happen when I'm out so I just stay home most days to be safe. Has anyone heard of this? I have an appt with my dr but just wanted to know if this is something that can happen with the sleeve at almost a year out.

Do you keep a food diary? that would show a relationship but the types of food you are eating before you have this issue.

I haven't actually written down what I have been eating, but I really should start doing that. Its just strange that this started happening around 6 months post op so I thought any sort of intolerance to food I would have known about earlier after surgery not so far out. But I have noticed it's not a lactose thing because when I first started having this issue I gave up dairy pretty confident that was the cause but it continued to happen. That's why I'm thinking could it be dumping syndrome?

I'm not saying this is it but what you describe is exactly how my wife IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) is. She just developed it out of the blue about 2 years ago no specific food triggers it just food in general. For me if I eat something with to much sugar in it I do get stomach cramping and loose bowel movement shortly after which my Dr does say is a mild form of dumping syndrome.

usually dumping syndrome is associated with consuming sugar. I have a friend that is a bypass patient, 10 years later she still gets it if she has sugar. Something as simple as some of a drink with sugar will make her nauseous and not feel well for a while. It causes her sugar to spike badly. She doesn't feel better until it comes back down.

I think what you are experiencing is something different.

    Hi there,
To me, it sounds more like IBS... I've had issues on and off for years, the thing that I've found that helps most is a Fiber supplement. I really like the Fiber Choice chewables. They seem to really help keep me regular. I actually ran out of them a few weeks after my surgery and boy oh boy, I had the worst and longest lasting bout of diarrhea ever! I had it for over a week straight!. But, once I started the Fiber Choice again, it went away fairly quickly. Hope this helps a bit!

It could be, although it is not very common in sleeve patients. It could also be IBS. Hard to say really. Definitely start tracking what you ate prior to the dumping. Here is some information about dumping syndrome. https://www.tijuanabariatrics.com/bl...yndrome-145136
