Support Group!

I typically love my monthly hospital support group and rarely miss. But this month it's a plus sized store talking to us about looking good for our size. NO THANK YOU. I do not miss you plus sized stores!!!! I never intend to step foot in one of your stores again.

Really?!?! I mean don't get me wrong we all need to accept our size but in that situation the goal is to get away from those stores! That just seems wrong and I'm so with you!

I guess for people who start the process really heavy like I was (BMI around 53: morbid obesity class 4) I started from 24/26, I was still a plus size after several months post-op, that could help patients feel better about themselves. Body dismorphia keeps running strong for me even today...

Indeed it's not for everyone. But yes, like Shirl said if they have a flexible return policy that could be nice too ..

I think someone should go in with a large bag of their plus size clothes and just dump them on the floor in front of them. And then say something to the effect, "I don't need you anymore!!" Something really motivational for the other people in the group. Then just walk out!!!!

I would guess not everyone at the support group is wearing normal sized clothes yet and they're trying to make the groups useful for everyone, regardless of where you are in your journey. Maybe the office staff could send out a message with the topic for the support group meeting ahead of time. That way you could skip the meeting if it wasn't something that interested you.

I went to one support group meeting and listened to to many people pushing their products, (yoga, vitamins etc). The vitamin guys kept stating "Everyone" needs these vitamins after surgery. Fortunately everyone is different and not everyone needs ever vitamin they insisted we all need. That was the last meeting I attended.

I still get catalogs in the mail (Woman Within) and I cringe at the sight of them (I always used them pre surgery for buying bras.) I've emailed them to take me off their mailing list, no such luck.

My husband brought in the mail yesterday and there was a Woman Within catalog. He asked me if I wanted to look at it and I told him NO! Never again! I'm only 5 days post-op but I have a closet stuffed with clothes in so many different sizes that I should never have to shop plus sizes again.

They do post the topics ahead of time, so I'm just skipping it. I realize it will be helpful for the newbies. (Though my advice to newbies is buy as few clothes as humanly possible, they will become big way too fast!!). I would definitely not shop at a plus sized boutique, more like a thrift shop or the Kohls 80% off rack. (Just got a really nice pair of jeans there for $4.00.)

Today I stopped at my favorite consignment shop and got 2 jackets, a blouse, a dress, and a pink tutu (I've ALWAYS wanted one!) for $41.

I don't know about others, but, I never made it to that fantasy land of thin. In fact I'm regaining. So something like that meeting would be nice. But, I am an hour away from my meeting place and don't drive the freeway and my husband hates to go there so I don't get to go like you fortunate people who should appreciate what you get. I don't have the support and friends there you have. It upsets me that you act like this, seems when you get thin, you get an attitude to go with it. Fat people aren't good enough anymore, sighs. Think of others besides yourself.

Lisa, that's just not true. If anything, they empathise with your situation even more. But let's face it, former fat people are different, and have a different mindset. That's why they are former fat people. Does it make them better? Absolutely not! Does it make them more aware of what it takes to remain a former fat person? Yes.

Watch Dr Duc Vuongs videos on "fat brain". It takes work, but you can overcome it. And yes, even people who have achieved thier goal weight still have fat brain. Once you've overcome that, you don't want to go back.

I think that's all they are saying about the plus sized clothes.
