    Post Soon-to-be a sleever

Hello all! I'm taking my first steps on the road to wellness and this site has been very useful in making my decision. I don't have a date yet for my surgery, but I hope it will be soon. I have appts tomorrow for blood work and a meeting with the dietician. I'm on a waitlist to see the psychologist soon, otherwise I have to wait til Sept to see her. In an ideal world I'd have this surgery in late August to accommodate my work schedule but at this point I am just happy to finally be on my way.

I have enjoyed reading about your successes and experiences. Weight issues and weight-related medical problems have plagued me for more than 20 years. I was tired of everyone, including doctors simply telling me to try harder, or try this diet, or this drug. I take 5 medications everyday which is 3 more than my 65 year-old mother! Something has to change. I believe this is the tool that will finally help me take control of my weight and begin living the healthier more active life I have always wanted.

I am going the self-pay route, as my insurance won't approve me at a BMI of 33.5. Apparently they want me to gain 10 pounds, and become more obese before they intervene. Healthcare.

I went to a seminar in February looking for info on the Reshape balloon procedure and had a great talk with the bariatric surgeon who thought even people with lower BMIs can benefit from the sleeve. The balloons are effective in the short term, but weight regain is more likely. So I am opting for the sleeve.

I am very hopeful but cautiously optimistic. I have an excellent support system and I believe this will work. I look forward to getting to know some of you and hearing more about your journeys.

    -SL

Go for it! Read, study, reasearch, listen. It's a big change, but so worthwhile.

    Welcome!

My way of thinking is warped...but I'd rather keep $10,000 to $15,000 in my pocket by gaining the 10 pounds needed to attain the minimum BMI requirement so your insurance will pay for the procedure.

I could do a lot of good things with that hard-earned cash, such as invest it in a 401k. Also, since we pay insurance premiums for years, it's time to get our insurance companies to invest in the policyholders. If they don't spend the money on you, they'll surely spend it on other unhealthy people in the risk pool. That's how I think.

I was gaining weight at the rate of about 7 pounds per month prior to being sleeved, so it would have only taken me 6 weeks at the most to gain enough weight to meet the BMI requirement your insurance company demands.

Anyhow, good luck to you. The sleeve was one of the best health-related choices I've made.

I had to gain a few to be approved so insurance would pay. Mine required me to be at 40 BMI. At any rate, I think the sleeve is much better than the balloon based on my research. I love my sleeve.
