Default Surgery Date and Protein Reccomendations!

    Hey, all!
A little update: I've been floating around for a week or two (mainly counting the seconds before I could officially get this ball rolling) and I went for my consult. It went really well (a little fast, my head was spinning a bit) but anyway ... I HAVE A SURGERY DATE!! August 8th I go in to start my life as a sleever!!
Now, I've been pouring over my dietary packet and I'm a little intimidated by all of the choices in powder supplements. In my packet they say "DO NOT USE whey protein blends or whey protein concentrate" but directly under that the recommend "Eat The Bear Whey Pure Isolate Protein" and "Inspire Pure Whey Isolate". I stopped in the grocery store to check out what they carried and got a little bit intimidated. Some of the more EXXXXTREME protein powders look as though they'd help you win the Tour De France a couple of times if you catch my drift 😉
So what has worked successfully for you? Be it flavor-wise or just helping you meet your daily protein goals!

    Any help is much appreciated!

    xoxo,

I didn't have those kinds of protein shake prescriptions. Everyone's taste buds are a bit peculiar, but my most favorite protein drink was (and still is) GNC's Lean Shake 25 Swiss Chocolate. My Number Two fave is Premier Protein's chocolate shake.

Other folks will chime in, I'm sure, with their faves. One brand that sucks eggs pretty universally is Isopure.

Of course, others' mileage may vary.

I also was not prescribed any particular protein supplement. I always recommend making your protein shakes from natural foods such as yogurt, eggs, almond butter, milk or nut milks, use berries or kale and spinach for additional nutrients. And you can add overnight soaked pumpkin, chia seeds and oats for a low carb filler and much needed fiber.

I have used several protein supplements as well, my favs are the Premier Chocolate or the Caramel ones, I got sick of the Vanilla post op but used it as a coffee creamer :-). I also recommend MuscleEgg (Pure Egg White Protein) all flavors are delicious!!! I loved NAKED Protein, Tera's Whey (hunger control) I believe they both ate whey isolate (which is better). I also used a vegan protein Garden of Life RAW Fit High Protein. Currently I use a protein blend of egg whites and whey isolate and casein and other aminos called Pro7ein, for pre/post workouts.

The only Isopure I have tried is the zero carb Black Iced Tea which I add like a 1/2 cup of lemon juice to make it less sweet.

I am only 10 days post-surgery - I drink the vanilla Premier Protein shakes and I add 2 scoops of peanut butter powder for extra flavor and protein.

The only qualifications my bariatric surgeon's practice had for appropriate protein shakes were the following:

    1. At least 20 grams of protein
    2. 200 calories or less per serving
    3. No more than 10 grams of sugar per serving

Therefore, the more popular shakes such as Ensure, Boost and Glucerna were unacceptable due to insufficient protein and too much sugar. I personally drank Premier Protein ready-to-drink shakes (160 calories & 30 grams of protein per carton).

Most people like Premier but those made me a little queasy. I like the EAS Advant Edge. Those are both good brands for bariatric patients because it is not just protein counts but also the other nutrients in the shakes that help us get the vitamins/minerals we need.

I have been using Unjury medical grade protein, you can find online and they sell a sample pack. I really like the taste and there is no heavy Whey aftertaste.

My first advice would be : don't stock up! try samples and wait until post-op because your taste might change. I couldn't stand my protein powder for months..

Like Rehabnurse I received advice from my team for choosing the protein shakes, since it's not easy to find those where I live I had to order it from overseas. So it was : 20gr protein, 200 calories, 15 gr carbs.

I was told to favor whey or soy based because the absorption by the body is better, since it's closer from "real food".

I tried whey and my body doesn't like it too much, I was borderline line lactose intolerant post-op, it got better with time.

    Anyway: my list.

My fav is Sunwarrior, Classic Protein, Sprouted & Fermented Raw Vegan Superfood(unflavored, not the organic one). I make shakes with water or almond mild, dark organic cocoa, PB2.
That the one I took pre-op, and then post-op around 7 months out because right after surgery I couldn't stand it.

I tried many others that I kind of liked too, here are my two fav
-Orgain, Organic Nutrition Complete Protein Shake, Creamy Chocolate Fudge (ready made, convenient to travel, but I don't like the powder version)
-Now Foods, Sports, Organic Whey Protein, Natural Unflavored (I used that one like the Sunwarrior and did my own shakes, but whey...not really good for my tummy)

I also used basic pea protein, brown rice protein or even tried soy (non GMO) if you buy it "by itself" it's much cheaper than buying the whole protein powder but you have to try and find what you like.

In the process I gave away lot's of containers because I tried so many brands but I had a hard time to stick to one until my taste bud came back to "normal".

    Good luck!!

I am starting my liquid diet with the Premier Protein-chocolate.... I am pre-op now so I am not stocking up until after to see what things taste like as others have suggested. I have access to purchase locally so I am going to have a few on hand but purchase as I go. We get our shakes from Costco and my daughter actually mixes 1/4 banana Premier Protein shakes into my granddaughter's milk so she gets added nutrition (she is 2). I like the banana and chocolate mixed too LOL
