    Default Getting started early!!!

I am so sick of being fat and not losing weight that I decided to try something different for me. I went to GNC and bought 2 containers of Total Lean shake mixture. It has 200 cal and 25 gm of protein per serving with 8 gm of fiber. I thought that I would start that twice a day and then have a lean cuisine or adkins dinner for 1 meal a day. I'm hoping that this may jumpstart some weight loss before I see the doctor. Has anyone used this Lean Shake from GNC?

I've been on the pre-op diet for a little over a week now and feel like I'm starving! I also exercise everyday and wonder if that has something to do with it. Either way, I would suggest a few extra protein shakes if you aren't on the pre-op diet yet. I haven't tried Total Lean shake mixture, but 25 grams of protein is good! I use orgain from costo and found one mentioned by my nutritionist called Sun Warrior.

    Good luck! ;-)

Losing weight before you see the doctor? you mean your bariatric surgeon?
Just be aware that many insurance ask for a patient to be at least at a 40 BMI (or less if two comorbidities). If your BMI is around 40 don't lose weight before you see him/her.

You should not worry about losing weight before you see the doctor. He is there to help you and won't be judging you on your weight. He will let you know how much you need to lose before surgery and what diet he wants you to follow. But changing your diet for good and focusing on healthy food, trying to exercise a little if possible to increase your muscle mass (I couldn't do much when I was much bigger, but I walked as much as possible) all those are important to prep for the surgery.
At the beginning we can't eat much post-op, and being focused on quality food is really important. Good protein, veggies etc..

Frozen dinners are not the best options. I know it's convenient when we work, but cooking some fresh fish with a little lemon and olive oil, a crunchy arugula salad with a few nuts will probably give you more nutriments. It doesn't take much time to prepare but your body will thank you! there's many options for making food fast from scratch.

I've been dealing with vitamin deficiencies even before the sleeve, but it got much much worth after. Tablets and supplements do help a little but the best way is to get it from food, the body will absorb it better. Because of my current location it's sometimes difficult to find the food I need but when I do I can see a huge difference, even in my blood tests.

    Take care!

I used the "ready to drink" Orgain when I traveled, didn't like the powder version (too sweet for me), but my fav is Sun Warrior (not the organic, the taste was weird) I used the classic unflavored version.
Funny thing is I used it during my pre-op diet, but couldn't stand it post-op for months. So my advice is "don't stock up!" taste can change for a while post-op.
But I tried many brands post-op, I was nauseous and tried to find something my upset stomach would like. It took me six months to feel better, and at some point I was able to tolerate Sun Warrior again...made me happy!
I make my shakes with almond milk or water, organic dark cocoa and PB2..sometimes I switch thing around, don't use cocoa and use frozen berries...using unflavored powder gives you many options.

Haven't tried it but the protein and fiber content seem great. Just know that post op not all protein shakes are created equal as bariatric patients also need other nutrients that are provided in our approved shakes. I would suggest asking your nutritionist.

Don't worry about the hunger because post op it will be gone...other than mental hunger or the heartburn that can mimic hunger pangs. Good luck on your surgery!!

    Hi,
I do like the GNC total Lean shakes. The powder has more flavors, Cookies and Cream is my favorite. But, the ready to drink tastes better to me. I actually haven't had the GNC shakes since my pre-op diet, because it was making me sick pre-op... I'm a bit worried to try it again. My favorite ready to drink shakes are Boost Calorie Smart, they have two different chocolate flavors that are both pretty good. Get the 8oz. ones, as the smaller 4oz. ones taste really metallic, yuck! I also like the Glucerna Hunger Smart in chocolate. The GNC, Boost, and Glucerna shakes were all OK with my doctor's pre-op diet plan. I also have to say that I'm not a huge chocolate shake fan, but now I can't stand the taste of many vanilla shakes. But the chocolate shakes mentioned above are great! I think I've tried just about every single protein shake ever invented! LOL. Premier Protein shakes are good too, with 30g of protein. My favorite is the caramel flavor, but it can be a bit hard to find sometimes.
Best of luck to you along your journey!
